WHO:
The Polacca Head Start Garden Project is located in Polacca, AZ, beneath the First Mesa Villages on the Hopi Reservation.  PHS Garden Project is comprised of students, teachers, parents and community members, who come together to create a learning environment rooted in the principles of working in harmony with nature, while reinforcing the traditional values and customs of the community.

WHY:

Youth Gardens:
  • Build an understanding of and respect for nature and our environment.
  • Motivate kids to eat and love fruits and vegetables.
  • Provide opportunities for hands-on learning, inquiry, observation and experimentation.
  • Promote physical activity and quality outdoor experiences.
  • Teach kids to nuture and care for other living things while developing patience.
  • Beautify the land and surrounding community.

HOW:
The PHS Schoolyard Garden Project will create an edible schoolyard by incorporating both appropriate Permaculture principles and traditional knowledge through the implementation of various projects; such as a rainwater harvest system, composting system, and a traditional agriculture site.
