Reminding the body of its natural ability to find balance

Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive system of healing which is helpful in addressing many physical and emotional issues. Developed by Dr Arthur Lincoln Pauls, a British Osteopath, Ortho-Bionomy supports the self-correcting capacity of the person through the use of gentle movement and positioning of the body, as well as light compression into the joints in order to facilitate the flow of energy and deeper relaxation. Ortho-Bionomy stimulates long-lasting changes by re-educating the client's body so that it can effectively maintain balance and optimal function on its own.

PHILOSOPHY

Based on osteopathic principles, the focus of the sessions are to facilitate the body's natural self-healing and self-regulating responses.  Ortho-Bionomy works with the body instead of on it. To elicit these responses the practitioner takes care to support the comfort and ease of movement within the client, thereby making the work very safe, even for those people who are highly sensitive or have limitations due to age or illness.

CONDITIONS WHICH ORTHO-BIONOMY CAN HELP

Because of the gentle nature of Ortho-Bionomy, this work is very helpful for many different types of problems and conditions. Among the conditions that Ortho-Bionomy can assist are:

  • Injuries, such as joint and muscle pain, whiplash and repetitive strain injuries.
  • Chronic Pain and Conditions, such as chronic neck and back problems, frozen shoulder, migraines, ongoing pain, adjunctive therapy with cancer treatments.
  • Structural Imbalances, such as osteoarthritis, scoliosis and kyphosis, autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid imbalances, stress related symptoms, general aches or fatigue, disrupted sleep patterns, and physical conditions associated with emotional imbalances, e.g., depression and trauma.

THE ORTHO-BIONOMY SESSION

While working with the fully clothed client, the practitioner explores the stress, injury or trauma patterns in ways that are physically comfortable for the client. Instead of manipulations or deep tissue work, the focus is to support the self-correcting patterns that an individual presents with during a session. The practitioner usually works with a client on a massage table, but may also work with the client seated or standing. Using both verbal and non-verbal feedback, the client and the practitioner monitor the releases and changes. The practitioner supports the physical and energetic patterns of the client and facilitates the client's repatterning during the session.

Ortho-Bionomy techniques range from the purely physical to the purely energetic. Some of the techniques that may be used in a session are:

  • Positional release
  • Range-of-motion exploration
  • Isometric and isotonic techniques
  • Rocking
  • Static holding
  • Subtle or minute movements
  • Work in the energy field
  • Cranial balancing
  • Visceral balancing
  • Neurolymphatic balancing
At the end of the session, the practitioner identifies self-care exercises for the client to do after and in between sessions. Clients are encouraged to receive 2 to 4 sessions initially after which an ongoing programme of self-care and/or individual sessions can be developed. Clients report experiencing pain relief, increased range of motion, greater ease of motion, structural realignment, increased relaxation, more efficient functioning on all levels, a greater sense of well being, postural balance, energy system balance, faster healing processes, greater sense of self empowerment, increased vitality, emotional balance and an increased sense of wholeness.
