What is Lapidary?
Lapidary is the craft of fashioning rough stones into attractive ornaments for wear or decoration. Some examples are: faceting of stones for use in rings, cutting of cabochons for use in brooches or pendants and polishing of stone clock faces. Setting of stones in silver or other materials is an allied craft.

About the Club

The Club was established in 1972 and moved to it's present location in 1985. It is an incorporated non-profit organisation and a member of the Gem and Lapidary Council of New South Wales. The Club currently has about 85 members.
Our Meeting Room and Workshop are located in the southern suburbs of Sydney  at the northern end of the Gymea Community Centre. There is access for disabled people. Gymea Railway Station is nearby and car parking is available close to the Centre.

Club Activities
The Club provides tuition in general lapidary, faceting and silver jewellery. General lapidary includes cutting of standard and fancy cabochons and freeform stones, polishing of flat faces, stone tumbling and carving. Faceting involves cutting of symmetrically placed faces on gemstones to enhance their brilliance. Silver jewellery is made both by lost-wax casting and hand fabrication methods. Special workshops, for example in carving or wire-wrapping, are conducted by skilled members or visiting craftspeople. Only members aged 12 or over can use the workshop machinery.
The Club participates in State and National lapidary exhibitions, conducts fossicking trips, provides lectures and social events.

What we make
Stones can be cut in any of the ways described above and displayed as-cut. The cut stones can also be used in jewellery items such as rings, brooches, bracelets or pendants, and in ornamental objects such as clock faces, bookends, jewellery boxes or ornamental table tops.
