Our Grade 2 Teachers are Mrs. McClain and Mrs. Hicks. They cover the following curriculum with their students: Reading Our students will practice and review daily the five essential components of a good literacy curriculum for reading success: phonemic awareness, phonics, word study, fluency and reading comprehension.
Literature: Students will listen, read and respond to a variety of genres at their appropriate reading level in their reading journals. From the Harcourt-Trophies curriculum students will read fiction and non-fiction literature. Students will respond and illustrate in their reading journals daily, practicing important comprehension/ focus skills such as: visualizing, making connections, determining the author’s purpose, finding the main idea, making predictions and comparisons, retelling, and inferring.
Mathematics: From the TERC Investigations curriculum students will practice math skills which include: number sense, computation and operations, patterns, problem solving, data analysis, fractions, geometry, and measurement. Units include:

Key Questions: Samples Write three equations that equal 26. Describe the attributes of a rectangle. Write a story problem for 32-8 Solve it. How many pockets are in the classroom today? How many ways can you make 50 cents using coins? What time will it be an hour from now? Social Studies: Second graders will study world and U.S. history, geography, and government by learning more about who Americans are and where they came from. Students will explore their own families’ history and listen to or read a variety of teacher or student selective stories about: distinct individuals, people’s achievements, customs, events, places and landmarks from long ago. Students will define and give examples of some of the rights and responsibilities that students as citizens have in the school. Give examples of people in the school or community who are good leaders and good citizens and explain the qualities that make them admirable. Students will understand the need to follow rules, accept responsibility and make good decisions. Key Questions: Samples Why do we have rules? What should be the goals of our government? Major Projects: English Language Arts: reading response journals, open response notebooks, literature open response, writing prompt, writer’s journal, published writing pieces, responses to key questions Mathematics: Math notebooks, TERC end of unit assessments, January mid-year exam, June final exam, observations of mathematics performance tasks and skill. Science: Science folder of work collections, observations of Science skills, response to key questions. Social Studies: Social Studies folder and responses to key questions.
Additional Information/Expectations: Tips for Parents: What can parents do to be helpful? · Read with your child daily. · Review school assignments. · Assist with your child’s homework when necessary. · Make every effort to have your child attend school every day and on time. · Be sure your child is prepared for school every day with school supplies such as pencils. · Provide a quiet area for your child to do his/ her homework. · Keep the school informed of any changes of addresses, phone numbers and medical issues. · Notify the school of any transportation changes. · Please write a note explaining any absences. · Student uniforms are mandatory, students should wear a light blue or white shirt/ blouse and dark blue pants, skirts or jumper.
