Kindergarten 1

Look at what we are doing in Kindergarten!

Mrs. Gangemi, Room 106

The K0/K1 program is literature rich and structured around a variety of multi-subject activities.  The activities focus on the subjects of Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies. Our early literacy program, OWL (Opening the World of Learning), will be implemented this year.  At the core of our program is a series of six thematic units: Family, Friends, Wind and Water, The World of Color, Shadows and Reflections and Things That Grow.

Owl places the highest priority on supporting children’s language learning.  Key vocabulary is identified for each book and words are highlighted for use during teacher led and children initiated activities.  Children hear and use words that relate to all domains (e.g. mathematical terms, names for emotions, and scientific terms) throughout the day.

Our daily routine includes time for:

Center time

Owl views children as active agents in the construction of their own knowledge.  Teacher led activities guide children and also allows them many opportunities for enjoyable participation.  Centers and small group activities provide plentiful occasions for children to playfully experiment with and refine the skills and concepts they are learning.  Classroom centers include Library, Manipulative, Writing, Dramatic Play, Art, Sand and Water, Math, and Building blocks.

Small groups

Through repeated games and activities, children learn to identify letters, numbers and shapes and begin to develop an understanding of how to use these symbols as part of more complex task such as writing, reading and counting.

Song and Word play

Songs, predictable books, and games are selected and designed specifically to help children attend to the sounds of language.

Rest time and snack time are also components of our daily schedule.

Our early math program Building Blocks is a new curriculum designed to provide the students with the opportunity to participate in many hands on activisties that will help to deepen their knowledge of numbers, arithmetic and geometry.  Students will participate in both small group and whole group activities.

The specialists who work with the children include the Computer teacher, Literacy teacher, Physical Education teacher, Music teacher, and Science teacher.

A large portion of your child’s educational program this year is devoted to strengthening social and emotional skills and fostering their growth.  Making and following rules and learning to share, wait, and take turns are all important parts of our daily lessons and routines.  Respecting oneself and each other is also a daily expectation.
