Grade 5

Our fifth grade teacher is Mrs. Kinch.  She covers the following curriculum with her students:

 

Reading Objectives:

Students will read from a literature based anthology. Students will engage in meaningful communication about what they have read. Using focus skills, strategies and themes they will answer an open response question weekly. Students will use a rubric aligned with the MCAS to assist in their reading responses.  Students will record vocabulary, a variety of independent responses and independent “just right” books read according to genre. They will also record skills and strategies that aid in comprehension and deep thinking skills. Students will work independently and in small guided reading groups (with teacher instruction). They will participate in a whole group mini lesson daily, as well as word study. Tests will include End of Theme and Grade tests throughout the year. (see attached schedule) A reading workshop is an organized set of language and literacy experiences designed to help students become more effective readers.

Math Objectives:

Students will develop an understanding of number sense, geometry, fractions, decimals and percents, data analysis and probability, as well as measurement.  They will work in small groups, large groups and independently to make sense of mathematics. They will engage in a Ten Minute Math activity daily, as well as the A.D.D. (Arithmetic Developed Daily) program which will review, reinforce basic Math skills. There will be nine units during the year with a Mid-Year and End of year Assessment as well as End of Unit Assessments.

Writing Objectives:

Writing workshop creates a space for students to do what professional writers do-write. Students spend time evaluating the writing process and developing their skills. Students will keep a writers notebook with “quick writes”, vocabulary and seed ideas. Notebooks will be used to practice skills and strategies taught through mini lessons. They will publish one piece per unit of study. Students will use the six traits to develop their writing as well as the study of mentor texts. They will utilize the MCAS/rubric provided to write and self evaluate effectively. Students will become more actively involved in their own a learning during workshop and in the process learn more about how to write in various styles, to various audiences.

Students will use language with clarity and voice to communicate meaning.  They will think about the reader while writing.  Students will organize a written text in a variety of ways to fit purpose, topic and audience.  They will demonstrate a command of spelling, punctuation, word usage and sentence structure. Students will rethink, revise and edit ones writing. Students will engage in mini lessons, independent writing group share and evaluation.  They will write three writing prompts during the year to evaluate progress.

Social Studies:

Students will read and discuss American history.  They will keep a notebook recording thoughts, ideas and activities.  They will identify ways of dating historical narratives, interpret timelines, observe and indentify details in cartoons, photographs and graphs relating to an historical event, use maps and globes to identify locations.  Students will study the pre-Columbian civilizations, the political, intellectual and economic growth of the colonies, the revolution and formation of a federal government under the constitution and the principles and institutions of the American government as well as the growth of American. Students will be tested at the end of each unit and engage in culminating activities as well (ex. Plays, diagrams, arts and crafts projects).
