Grade 1

Our Grade 1 Teachers are Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Ras.  They cover the following curriculum with their students:

Reading:

We are working on the Readers Workshop model in first grade using the Harcourt Trophies series.  The Trophies series integrates numerous components, including shared literature, phonics, phonemic awareness etc. and allows the children to reading from a variety of entrances.  We assess the children using the “Grade” reading teast at the beginning of the school year.  We also use ongoing Dibels assessments to monitor progress throughout the year.  This assesment helps identify students who have not yet met grade level standards during the course of the year.  Our students look forward to reading with their fourth-grade Reading Buddies on Friday afternoons.

Math:

Our math is also a workshop model using the TERC 2.  It is a hands-on curriculum.  This is really fun for the students.  We are assessing students using unit assessments as well as BPS assessments.

We also rely on our daily observations and conferences that take place in reading, writing & math that play an important role in our instruction.

Writing:

This year we have introduced the Lucy Calkins’ Six Traits Writers Workshop model.

Social Development:

We do a great deal of community building in first grade.  Our classroom rules are TO RESPECT & COOPERATE WITH OTHERS. This is not only a first grade rule but is woven throughout the school.

ALL is well in first grade & we are ALL trying our best. IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD and IF ANYONE KNOWS THE STAFF AT THE BATES....WE ARE THE VILLAGE....
