At the Phineas Bates we have a close-knit community of approximately 300 scholars and staff. We have two regular education classrooms for each grade level, with the exception of fifth grade, as well as advanced work program for grades 4 and 5, and two special education classes. New for the 2008 school year we added an integrated K1 program. In addition to their primary areas of study, students have Music, Science, Computers, Literacy enrichment and Physical Education. Bates Mission Statement The Bates Elementary School is dedicated to enhancing the social, emotional and academic needs of every student. We stress the importance of differences and prize the unique worth of each individual student. As our staff says, “Everyone Rates at the Bates!” Bates School ensures a challenging and flexible curriculum with high expectations, emphasizing basic skills and enrichment activities. We provide a nurturing atmosphere where children can learn and grow. We believe that integrating the resources and talents of students, staff and parents, prepares our children for today’s complex world.
Partnerships at the Bates There are several services available to students and families when they are part of the Bates Community: YMCA Before and Afterschool Program: Licensed program for children ages 5-12. The program is held at the Bates School and is open before school from 7:30 AM – 9:10 AM and from the end of the school day 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM on school days. On snow days and school vacations including summer vacation, the program is held at the West Roxbury YMCA from 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Contact Elizabeth Grace, at the YMCA @ 617-323- 3200. School Community Consultation & Treatment Program (SCCAT) :Accessible and flexible clinical support services to children and families in Boston Public Schools. Rachel Levenson 617-516-5150 Artisan Music Studios: After school music lessons for students by the semester: 617-323-8818 Technology Goes Home: Free program for families of our 4th and 5th grade students where students and their family can learn technology skills. Completion of the free course allows families to purchase a refurbished computer with brand new printer for $90.00. Healthy Schools Program (Alliance for a Healthier Generation): An organization that provides support and technical assistance to schools to support our efforts to improve nutrition, physical activity and overall wellness of students and staff. Lesley University: Full and part-time student teachers from Lesley are available to support teachers in the classrooms. Jewish Coalition for Literacy: Literacy tutors come to the Bates once a week to work with individual and small groups of students.
