Jazzmates Philosophy

I love the 'feel' of the small bands that played the clubs on the American East and West coasts. And I love the wonderful melodies of the 1930s and 40s.

I play all kinds of music. But I keep coming back to that era, and that's why I started the JazzMates.

Want to know the nicest compliment we've been paid? Someone said, "You know that tune you played the other night? Well I can't get the damn thing out of my head!"

People tell us we always look as though we're enjoying ourselves. You know what? We are!

Call me for a quote - the number is below.

Phil Probert's Jazzmates welcome you!

I'm Phil Probert, I'm a guitarist and I've been a jazzman all my life. My favourite music is the small band swing of the thirties and forties - intimate, driving and melodic. I can bring it to you in various formats, from a three to a seven-piece band. If you're looking for live jazz for your special occasion, or your club, Phil Probert's Jazzmates are here to oblige.

Book us and you'll be getting the best of the Midlands' professional jazz musicians, drawn from my little black book. They'll be selected for their skill, their 'fit' with one another, their good taste and their desire to entertain.

We care about giving your guests a great time and we work very hard to ensure we know what you want.

    * Do you want tasteful music for a reception while your guests schmooze over a drink?
    * Do you want a concert performance for jazz enthusiasts?
    * Do you want a rip-roaring band for dancers?

No problem for us, and yes, we do know the difference!

We bring you the jazz of the 1930s, '40s and early 50s. As in 'They don't write melodies like that any more!'
But if 'trad' jazz is what you prefer, let us know when you call or email, and we'll bring the banjo!

Jazz in Malvern

I'm lucky to live by the beautiful Malvern Hills, close to the wonderful Abbey Jazz club, which holds sessions on alternate Sundays at Malvern Rugby Club.

Abbey Jazz is run by my very good friend Len Thwaites, and there you can hear the small band swing which we both love. Len has the special gift of bringing together a different band for each club session, who 'click' together. Over thirteen years, that has produced some of the best, swingingest small band sessions you could hope to hear anywhere in the UK. Don't take my word for that - it's what a number of visiting jazz stars have told us at the end of some memorable evenings.

I'm grateful to Len for introducing me to some wonderful musicians.

More about Abbey Jazz here.
