F@H Wudget Beta

March 3rd, 2012
Beta 1.5.7k
Note: This client only works with the current beta and not the previous. FAHControl has had some backend changes in the way they format dates and has also removed some fields. Please keep an eye on Elapsed Time and Estimated Finish as these were effected the most. They appear to be accurate most of the time, but sometimes not.

New:
  • Background Update Agent for widget.
  • Folding@home News RSS feed integrated. Only shows the newest post.
  • Works with latest client.
Changes:
  • Remote stats is now saved in Application Folder instead of preferences.
  • Elapsed Time and Finish have been changed. Should be more accurate.
  • Many backend changes.
Bug Fixes:
  • Fixed some unit name recognition. As before this is an ongoing thing.

Beta 1.5.7i
New:
  • Can set user, team and key from back of widget.
Changes:
  • Added Number of Atoms to local stats and removed passkey yes/no as it's no longer needed.
Fixed:
  • Better unit name filtering. It's still a work in progress, but so far has been good for the 3 variant work units I've had.
  • Increased local access speed.
  • Displays information when client is paused.
  • Better error checking and no more console socket disconnect messages.
To do: I'm debating putting in a pause/start button for console mode. This will enable you to have more control over the client through the widget.  I've been able to get the console mode working on restart with the new client. Unfortunately I cannot get it to stop without a lot of effort, but this is a bug in Folding Client or maybe it's a feature, but I haven't logged a bug report yet

Note: I may put a built in update notification in. Seems like an obvious thing to do.

Beta 1.5.7h
New:
  • Works with the latest Client 7 beta.
  • Provides Description (when available). Look for the dot next tot timer.
  • Tries to provide project name, not just number (experimental). Extracts from project page, which is cached in tmp directory, or description. If not found then it'll display Client 7 State, hopefully. Please report any odd names, but some are odd to begin with.
Changes:
  • Local client info order. Seems more logical to me. Feedback welcome.
  • Color changes for some user remote fields (ex. green/red).
Fixes:
  • Cleaned up bottom of widget.
  • Fixed preferences (misspelled variable name).
I still need to put some double checking for the Client 7 server. The latest beta does seem to timeout now and then, which makes accessing from the widget impossible. Even when you close the client the processes seem to run rogue in the background. You have to try launching Client7 and closing it a few times. FahControl will not stop it. I have nothing to do with this, but it's definitely an unusual bug in Client 7.

The widget is slightly smarter how it gathers information from the project page. It now stores this information in tmp directory. It only updates if the project is not found. This will have even fewer requests from Folding@home server. There's additional information that can be obtained from that page and it may be incorporated in the future, but so far no one has requested it.

Remember that the name of the Protein is experimental and most likely will fail at times. Please report what it is and should be if you can. At least provide the project number and what it displayed.

Thanks!

Beta 1.5.7e
Changes:
  • Some small UI changes on the back.
  • Cleaned up some old code.
  • Local & Remote viewing options are visible, but not available or selectable.
  • Fixed some updating sequences.
This widget will be in beta as long as the FAHControl 7 is in beta. I don't believe we're supposed to release a version until it's ready, but I'm not 100% positive.

Growl isn't currently working and I really don't know if it's necessary. I may put it in later. The local and remote view options will come back in the future, but I have to write some new animations.

Future: I will add a remote computer connection, but this wont happen for a while and will probably be in the 2.0 release. My biggest hurdle are creating a secure method of accessing the keychain. It most likely only work with OS X and Linux computers. If I ever obtain a copy of windows, then I may do it.

Also, I have thoughts of a new non-widget monitor which I think may be cool, but I have to learn a new language to implement it.

Beta 1.5.7c8d
Fixed:
  • Team List (should resolve crash)
  • Preferences

Changes:

  • Color of stats numbers etc
  • Added color change for user wu's and rank.

Please report any issues to pgwalsh at the gmail dot come thingy. I know there's still extra space at the bottom. I was going to use an additional item for the official unit name instead of just the project number, but the updates on Folding@Home haven't had much other than the project number and either does the local client.

Also note that when showing your widget it takes a couple seconds for the local stats to update. This is due to connecting to the local client server, it's not as fast as qdtools and qdtools doesn't work with client 7. I'm working on making it faster, but I'm not sure if there's anything I can do.

There's still work to be done on the back end.

Beta 1.5.7c8c
This version only works with Client 7 and there will be no more development for Client 6. This version is very Beta and whatever you find please let me know at pgwalsh at the gmail dot com.

What doesn't work:
  • Preferences are currently broken.
  • Hiding remote and local client is broken.
  • Other things could be broken.
  • Arrows and colors are not working.

What's New:

  • A completely new look.
  • Works with Client 7.

Notes:

Feedback on look and content very welcome. Don't get mad, nothing is in stone and give it time. :P

Also there extra space on the bottom of the widget and I haven't decided if I'm going to add server update notice and some additional local stuff. I know some people get made because the widget has too much info and is large. I have a 27" monitor, so it doesn't bother me at all, but I can make a compact mode.

Yes no image of the new look. Hope you like it.

Beta 1.5.2 Beta

If you're running an intel mac, I highly recommend installing the new folding client. If you're on a Mac Pro or have a core i5/i7 processor then definitely upgrade as you will fold faster and get more points if you meet your bonus. However, to take advantage of this you will need a PassKey. The widget will tell you if you have one or not at the bottom of additional info, but if you know you don't, then follow this link passkey and get one. You will not see the benefit until you've folded 10 projects successfully. I fortunately signed up for this a long time ago without benefit until now.
  • Added Bonus Points, Bonus Factor, kFactor and bonus averages
  • Moved Size, Unit Number to Additional Information
  • Added Passkey Check which is only good for x86 clients.
  • Enhanced Project name for core2 and core3 projects that only contain P####. They will double check once on the Folding@home for a more descriptive project name.
  • User Name, Team Name, Project number/name and Passkey are clickable web links to specific pages at Folding@home.

  • Now hides user info if not available on EOC. Will reappear if info becomes available.

Beta 1.5.1h

This version has a major rewrite so it may have errors as it's only been tested on x86 Mac Pro. However, it should preform better.
  • Fixed console error message that didn't affect the client.
  • 70% rewrite of code base.
  • Smoothed out animations and increased speed of drop down boxes.
  • Should see performance improvement, reduction of resources, and overall solidity.
I learned some new things along the way and it should result in an overall improvement in the widget. I eliminated global variables and greatly reduced access to preferences. One area that needs most testing is people running laptops that put them to sleep as in closing them etc. I don't run folding on my laptop because it sounds like an airplane ready to takeoff and frankly annoys me a bit. Any feedback is really appreciated whether positive or negative. I do like to know if you've had it running with a hiccup.

Beta 1.4.3g

  • Changed local display order for hours.
  • Housekeeping
This beta should fix some issues with additional fields not displaying properly due to xml node errors.

Here's an example of using the checkbox feature and making a smaller widget.

Below are two fully viewable widgets. The one on the right is display the checkbox selector where you can select which fields are viewable. Use the arrow › on the bottom right to open and close the selector. Enjoy!
