Attendance and Block Policy

Pacific Grove Cross Country Attendance and Block Policy

Regular attendance is critical to achieve success in Cross Country. The occasional excused absence is acceptable; however unexcused absences are not acceptable. Please notify Mr. Light as soon as possible when you find yourself unable to attend a practice or meet. Contact information for both coaches is below.

1.  To be eligible to compete in a meet an athlete must complete a minimum of ten practices to the coach’s satisfaction.

2.  In addition to item one; at weekly practices, athletes must demonstrate to the coach’s satisfaction that they are able to compete on any given Thursday/Saturday meet.

3.  One unexcused absence will result in negative seven (-7) block points. Two unexcused absences will result negative seven (-7) block points and the resetting of practice total to 5 days completed. Third and subsequent unexcused absences will result in (-7) block points and the resetting of practice total to 0 days completed.

4. Your attention before and during practice is critical for a number of reasons. We normally have a short (approximately 5-10 minutes) meeting in Mr. Light’s room before practice starts. During this time we typically discuss what is planned for the upcoming practice, upcoming meets, and results from past meets and practices. In order to keep these meetings as brief and productive as possible it is essential that everyone is focused and quiet while the coaches are speaking. When the coaches are done with their portion they will take questions. Disruptions will not be tolerated and will incur serious consequences.

How to earn a Block:

Points will be awarded to the top fourteen runners at each MTAL competition on the following basis. Rankings are strictly by time (points can be earned by runners in non-varsity races as long as their time is fast enough)

                                      Runner I = 14 points                Runner 8 = 7 points

                                      Runner 2 = 13 points                Runner 9 = 6 points

                                      Runner 3 = 12 points                Runner 10 = 5 points

                                      Runner 4 = 11 points               Runner 11 = 4 points

                                      Runner 5 = 10 points               Runner 12 = 3 points

                                      Runner 6 = 9 points                 Runner 13 = 2 points

Runner 7 = 8 points                 Runner 14 = 1 points

These values will be doubled at the MTAL Championship meet.

Athletes with the top seven point totals (boys and girls) at the end of the season will be awarded a block or star as appropriate.
