ATVs and Wildfire Safety

posted Jul 28, 2010 10:36 PM by George Hohnisch   [ updated Aug 23, 2011 8:11 PM by Tim Boyce ]

Ministry of Forests and Range

Nearly half of the wildfires in B.C. are caused by human activities. In the Prince George area we have had 4 sawdust pile fires to date this year. Last year the Prince George Fire Zone took action on 11 sawdust pile fires.  All human-caused fires are preventable.

The exhaust systems of all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and motorcycles produce an enormous amount of heat, and can ignite brush from both heat and sparks from their exhaust systems.

When there is an increase in fire danger rating, the following precautions should be taken if using these devices on back roads or in the bush:

o       Use caution when operating these devices.

o       Don’t drive or park motorcycles or ATV’s on dry grass or areas where the exhaust system is close to combustibles.

o       Use an approved spark arrester on the exhaust system.

o       Take all appropriate precautions with any other heat sources such as matches or smoking materials. ( e.g. cigars, cigarettes, etc)

To report a wildfire or unattended campfire call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks. For more information on open fire restrictions or for updates on current wildfire activity, visit www.bcwildfire.ca
