Dear Parent or Guardian,

 

  My name is Mike Thompson and I am the Physical Education instructor at Penn Forest.  Nancy Tucker will also be teaching Physical Education to some of your children.  It is the belief of the Roanoke County School System that Physical Education should be an integral part of the total educational program.  The Physical Education program is unique since total growth and development- including physical, mental, social, and emotional aspects- forms the core of this curriculum.  Here at Penn Forest, we explore movement concepts and skill themes to help students develop their physical skills.  Movement concepts involve spatial awareness, effort, and relationships, while skill themes focus on locomotor skills, non- manipulative skills, and manipulative skills. 

 

  Fitness is also an important aspect of Physical Education.  Many components of fitness are discussed and explored with students; however, it takes involvement outside of the classroom to impact fitness levels.  Fourth and fifth grade students will take Fitnessgram Tests in the fall and spring to test individual fitness levels.  Students in third grade will practice these tests so they can be familiar with the testing and become aware of their own fitness levels.  It is my hope that we can work together to implement fitness activities and good nutrition habits at home for your children to help them become more fit and healthy. 

 

  In addition to these concepts, it is imperative that students learn and use safety procedures, rules for activities, and sportsmanship to help them develop mentally, socially, and emotionally.  It is our goal to recognize, respect, and provide for individual differences in students as well as provide students the opportunity to achieve success in physical activity to the extent of their abilities.  It is also our goal to equip students to meet the Virginia Standards of Learning for their respective grade levels.  We look forward to working with your children.
