Competition

Design the front cover of a novel!

This website ran a competition to design a front cover for my novel Eyes And Knives.

Below are some of the entries I received. If you like what you see, check out the artists' websites and show them some support. You can also click on the images to get them at full size.

Winning entry
by Rebekka Grant
As the author of Eyes And Knives, I feel that Rebekka's entry strongly reflected the mood of the novel. I love the mystique around this image, with the themes of anonymity and surveillance captured perfectly. This businessman exudes power and attitude through his body language, even though his face is smudged out. We'll be working together, along with design company Fusiform, to touch it up for print and to add the book's title. Click on the image to see it in greater detail.

In her own words:

"The obscured face of the businessman hides his identity and I think captures the somewhat unnerving themes of surveillance and betrayal in the story, as the viewer is unsure of who/what they are seeing. I created the image using paint and collage and then layered it up digitally to create the final effect."

Check out her site for more of Rebekka's work.

Runner up
by Sean Smith
Sean, a full time designer, came up with this fantastic entry. I loved the way this image showed snapshots of the people and events from Eyes And Knives. There are a lot of characters in the novel, making this design all the more relevant. It would have been loads of fun to work with Sean and play around with the silhouettes if he'd won. A very close second!

Other cool entries
Anna Taylor
Anna drew this cool picture of one of the novel's characters, Ian Albright, leading a group of faceless government agents.

Anthony Murray
Scratchboard style. Have a look at this one close up!

Usoon Woo
I had trouble reducing this image in size and unfortunately it has developed an unexpected texture. That's probably because I use MS Paint. Check out Usoon's site; there's 'lungflies' and creepy music which I can't stop listening to.

Liz Hamid

Drawn by hand and photographed with her mobile phone. Liz is a friend of mine and I've told her I'll use this image when I write a post-apocalyptic novel!

Labinot Termkolli
RockScorp from deviantART created this entry.

Robert Turpin
A very cool entry here. I think this would make a perfect background to a poster or some such.
