When Marco Polo came to Hangzhou in the 13th century he declared that "it is the most beautiful and elegant city in the world". There is a popular saying: "Above there is heaven, below there are Hangzhou and Suzhou." Hangzhou's "heavenly" beauty attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to its exquisite West Lake (Xi Hu) area each year to enjoy the placid lake, beautiful gardens, reflecting pools, lavish temples and friendly lakeside teahouses.
The Travel Program:
Guests will be met at Shanghai International Airport on April 6, 2009. Overnight will be in Shanghai and on April 7, we’ll tour some of the highlights of Shanghai, including places of Jewish interest, among them the Hong Kou district where some 30,000 Jews spent World War II in safety; the synagogue (now a museum) in the area, and a park with a monument commemorating the experience of the Jews in Shanghai written in Hebrew and Chinese. Places of general interest also have some Jewish connections, among them the European-style buildings on the Bund, Shanghai famous riverside promenade.
Yuyuan Garden is a famous classical garden located in Anren Jie, Shanghai. The true treasure of Yuyuan Garden is the Exquisite Jade Rock. Located across from Yuhua Hall, it is one of the three famous rocks in the southern region of the Yangtze River. (The other two are Duanyun Feng in Suzhou and Zhouyun Feng in Hangzhou.) The rock is 3.3 meters (about 10.8 feet) in height and has 72 holes. What is interesting about this rock is that if you burn a joss stick just below the rock, the smoke will magically float out from all of the holes.
Nanjing Road China's premier shopping street, 3.4-mile-long Nanjing Road, starts at the Bund in the east and ends in the west at the junction of Jingan Temple and Yan'an West Street. Today Nanjing Road is a must-see metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion-seeking shoppers from all over the world. Today over 600 businesses on Nanjing road offer countless famous brands, superior quality, and new fashions. Upscale stores include Tiffany, Mont Blanc, and Dunhill. In addition, approximately a hundred traditional stores and specialty shops still provide choice silk goods, jade, embroidery, wool, and clocks. The Bund, is Shanghai's famous waterfront district. It is located across the Huangpu River from the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Often called the "Museum of Architecture", the Bund is famous for its old Western styled buildings. Originally the financial center of Shanghai, the Bund's many old stone buildings were built by western companies in Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism, and Renaissance styles. It is amazing to see these western styled buildings in a Chinese city Observatory atop one of the skyscrapers for a view of the rapidly developing city.
Shanghai, the largest city in China, is a seamless blending of Western and Eastern cultures. It is known as the Paris of the east and is one of the world's major cosmopolitan metropolises. With a history of over 2,000 years, Shanghai has something to offer everyone. It is steeped in ancient culture, and the most modern amenities, and its nightlife is world-renown. With connections to airports from around the globe and connections to all of the major cities in China, Shanghai is the perfect location to begin a tour of the amazing country that is China.
On April 8, we’ll travel to Hangzhou arriving in time to prepare for Yom Tov. On Yom Tov and Shabbat, (in addition to traditional activities) schedule guided walks will explore the vicinity of the hotel. On the second day of Yom Tov, there will be a complete Yom Tov schedule. During Hol HaMoed, a full touring program will visit many local attractions. When we are away from the hotel for lunch, our cooks will prepare kosher-for-Passover lunch boxes for us to take along with us.

It is surrounded by hills on tree sides and faces the downtown area on one side. The charming lake is a pearl that lay by the city. There are two brocade-ribbon-like causeways inside the lake, namely Bai Causeway and Su causeway, and they divide the lake into five parts. Three man-make islands named Three Pools Mirroring the moon, Mid-lake Pavilion and Mr. Ruan TYuan's Mount stand elegantly in the outer lake. The "Ten West Lake views"and the "ten new West Lake view"add much more beauty to the West Lake.
Yellow Dragon Cave is located at the northern foot of Qixia Ridge in beautiful Zhejiang. The formation of this natural spectacle has a legend that a monk from Yellow Dragon Hill in Jiangxi Province in the Southern Song Dynasty came to the site and decided to build a temple. One day, a yellow dragon suddenly appeared and hit the ground; then, the place miraculously turned out to be what we see today
Hangzhou is yet another Chinese "shopping paradise". The city offers a superb collection of local crafts, rare arts and other souvenirs. Some typical Hangzhou specialties and souvenirs: Hangzhou Silk, Hangzhou Embroidery, West Lake Silk Umbrellas, Tianzhu Bamboo Chopsticks, as well as White Chrysanthemum Tea and world-famous Longjing Tea. One great place to souvenir shop in Hangzhou is the market that opens every evening on Wushan Road. Here you can avoid the high prices at Hangzhou's many tourist shops. Bargaining is not only recommended, it is required! Bargain hard and you will go home with some great deals. Also, Hangzhou has a great outdoor silk market called the China Silk City (Zhongguo Sichou Cheng) on Fengqi Lu Wuzhen is a village built so that its houses are on canals In 2001 the village was opened to the public as a tourist site. It is the oldest village of its type in the world and its buildings reflect an architechtural variety in wood and stone They are preserved to the greatest extent possible so they authentically reflect the periods in which they were built There we may see a blacksmith, metal workers, people spinning threads on spinning wheels, in their natural habitat, along with people preparing their meals, tending their gardens, or just getting together to gossip.
Pre Pesach Tour (Optional): BEIJING - April/6 - April/8 http://www.panoramas.dk/7-wonders/great-wall.html The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers (4,163 miles ) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections of the great wall are now in ruins or even entirely disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance. The Imperial Palace of China's last two dynasties, The Forbidden City is the largest palatial complex in the world and perhaps the most exquisite. It was rumored to have 99991/2 rooms. Each building is a work of art and is home to some of the most beautiful works of art in the world. Every square inch of the palace is decorated in beautiful paintings, gold leaf, and works of art. The courtyards of each building were designed as a garden and even though no longer home to the emperor, the palace still holds a regal atmosphere. Beijing's Summer Palace was the summer retreat of China's ancient emperors. As soon as Beijing became too hot, the emperor, his empress, concubines and entire retinue all traveled to the Summer Palace located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing. The Summer Palace was first built by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) emperor Qianlong as a gift for his mother's birthday. Listed on UNESCO's Cultural Heritage List in 1998, the Summer Palace is a favorite destination for visitors to Beijing
