PERSIB CAWANGAN BELAIT

NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

This website is dedicated to enthusiasts of the Pencak Silat - the ancient Malay (Melayu) Martial Arts and especially to the current and ex-members of PERSIB Cawangan Daerah Belait in Negara Brunei Darussalam.

The word 'PERSIB' is an acronym of "Persekutuan Pencak Silat Kebangsaan Brunei Darussalam" and was legally registered under the Government of His Majesty on the 31st December 1986.

PERSIB is one of the original four founding members (besides IPSI in Indonesia, PESAKA in Malaysia and PERSISI in Singapore) of the PERSILAT, the Persekutuan Pencak Silat Antarabangsa or the International Pencak Silat Federation, which was founded in Jakarta on 11th March 1980, and remains the only international organization of Pencak Silat in the world.

The late Al-Marhum The Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan was a true enthusiast of the Pencak Silat and each year in conjunction with his birthday Pencak Silat championships was organised as one of the main event in the celebration and it continues to the present day. Seni Pencak Silat championship had a very special venue during the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan era where the national grand finale was contested at the Istana or the Palace.

Al-Marhum Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan highly valued the art of seni pencak silat as the cultural heritage to the Malays and with the formation of PERSIB he emphasised that the organisation should continue to preserve and promote the Cekak Asli and Kuntau Brunei as being the martial art that traditionally belonged to Brunei.

Every year the Cekak Asli and Kuntau Brunei championships is organised by PERSIB and pesilats from each district will be competing to win the prestigeous title at the national grand finale.

The art of Silat Cekak Asli should not be confused with the similarly sounding art also called Silat Cekak found in Western Malaysia.

The ‘Pacah Ampat’ (formal movements around the practice and tournament ground) is done in a very graceful manner, where the movements are almost dancelike.

The core techniques in Cekak Asli Brunei are the Tumbuk Kanan, Tumbuk Kiri, Tatak, Simbur, Paras and Tikam/Radak. If none of these techniques appear in any form in the art, then it is not considered as Cekak Asli Brunei.

The ‘tatak’ (overhead strike) can be done in a direct overhead delivery, and sometimes it angled to either side of the neck.

Some practitioners emphasise the ‘majlis’ (formal or exhibitionary) aspect of the art. Some instructors even hide a large portion of the actual technique, for reasons of mistrust and secrecy.

The PERSIB Cawangan Daerah Belait (CDB) is one of the four branches under the PERSIB organisation and was formed in the late eighties.
