topic for this year is 'A Decade of Reform 1998-2009’; looking at
changes after Soeharto's regime ended in 1998. The Spirit of
Reformation promising democracy, equity, and justice among Indonesian
people has been the underlying force guiding these changes. However,
after a decade of reformation, Indonesia’s democracy has been
questioned in relation to its ability to ensure that every individual
has rights and access to maximize his or her opportunities. Democratic
forms of authority and politics have not showed their correspondence to
the culture of democracy at the grass-root level. ‘Power’ has not been
distributed equally to every citizen as democracy promises. ICCE 2009
is expected to be one way for Indonesian students and experts on
Indonesia to exercise their academic intellect for the good of
Indonesia while promoting Indonesia to the outside world without
promoting a particular political or religious message.

There
will be two seminar sessions at the conference covering contemporary
politics and arts and culture in Indonesia, with speakers including
professors and graduate students from UH Manoa, Arizona State
University, and Columbia University. Furthermore, cultural celebrations
will include cultural exhibits, traditional dance and music from Aceh
to Bali, Kartinian ethnic fashion show, Dangdut music (Indonesian
popular music), and Indonesian food.

ICCE 2009 is organized by
the Indonesian Student Association in the US (PERMIAS) Hawaii Chapter,
Nusantara Society, and Nongkrong Yuk! Indonesian Club (both at UH
Manoa); and co-sponsored by the Embassy and Consulate General of
Indonesia in the US and East West Center Education Program.

Further details and press kit are available at the PERMIAS website: http://www.permiashawaii.org/search/label/Agenda

Contact: Erenst Anip at erenst@gmail.com or +1 808 722 6184

<sites:pageName>invitationtothepublicindonesianconferenceandculturaleventicceapril242009</sites:pageName><sites:revision>1</sites:revision>

Hasil Pertemuan 19 Februari 2009

1. Identity in Contemporary Indonesia: During the twentieth century the
acceptance of “modern” art helped expand the space in which Indonesian
artists could express their views visually and act as effective social
and political commentators. From the 1950s heated debates arose
concerning the degree to which art should operate as an agent for
political views, and during the Suharto years the government moved
quickly to eliminate any left-wing tendencies among artists. In the
atmosphere of greater freedom that has characterized the last decade,
the development of popular art forms like installations and graffiti
have given rise to new questions about what constitutes “art”, and
about the role of artists as critics of contemporary society. In
contrasting the Orde Baru time with the post-Reformasi era, this
presentation will illustrate some of the ways in which Indonesian
artists have relayed their views about contemporary concerns to a range

fall of Soeharto in May 1998 fundamentally changed both the political
structure and the political culture within Indonesia. This change is a
result of the decline of authoritarian rule, which was followed by the
people of Indonesia’s increased enthusiasm for democracy. In addition
to this, the debate on political Islam within Indonesia has also been
regenerated and revived. This is not only a classical subject but also
a fundamental issue in modern Indonesian discourse.

Undoubtedly,
Islamic groups were one of the key players and co-founders of modern
Indonesia. During the revolution and pre-independence era Islamic
clerics and ulamas strongly contributed to the formation of an
independent Indonesia. The Islamic Trading Union (SDI), for instance,
was one of the first modern organizations in the colonial era, which
embodied a sense of Indonesian nationalism.

One of the
fundamental factors contributing to Indonesian nationalism has been the
spread of Islamic teachings throughout the country and the use of
bazaar Malay by many middle class Indonesians. Both the distribution of
Islamic teachings and the use of bazaar Malay have been occurring for
hundreds of years throughout the archipelago.

I will define
political Islam as any activity carried out by any individual or Muslim
group, using whatever means possible with the purpose of influencing
and stimulating the political process. Therefore, the individuals and
Muslim groups aim to determine the practice of democracy. I also define
two types of political Islam, the first is the electoral political
Islam and the second is the non-electoral political Islam.

In
this presentation I focus more on the electoral political Islam, thus
describe and explain the position of Muslim political groups within
Indonesian politics for the decade following the fall of Soeharto.
There is a strong tendency that all Indonesian major political parties,
including the more secular parties, perceive Islam aspiration as one of
their political agendas. The latest development of political Islam
concerning to the result of the 2009 Election will also be illustrated
and explained. There is also a strong suggestion that the more secular
political parties have defeated electoral political Islam camp.

----

Teguh Santosa is

questions: First, what is their respective perceptive on the role of
women in the area of politics?; Second, what are the strategies they
use to encourage their members to be active in politics (i.e. to be
good voters, parliamentary candidates); Third, do they have different

and the fall of Suharto in 1998 crippled the Indonesian film industry:
annual movie production in the Republic dropped to almost zero in the
late 1990s. The once ubiquitous family melodramas which reified the
patrimonial dictatorship vanished, and the exploitation movies which
featured screen siren Suzzanna and ur-hero Barry Prima were no longer
mass-produced for popular audiences. But a decade later, a new
generation of filmmakers are making almost 50 movies a year – despite
the stark problems of piracy, screen quotas, and neocolonial
international film distribution. Their films are finding audiences –
and acclaim – at festivals in America and Europe. The story of this new
era in Indonesian cinema will be analyzed through personal interviews
with the new generation of filmmakers, including Garin Nughuro (autuer
director of film festival favorite OPERA JAWA), Riri Riza and Mira
Lesmana (the nation’s most commercially-successfully filmmaking duo,
and creators of ADA APA DENGAN CINTA), and filmmakers at the margins
like Edwin and Prima Rusti (who are documenting Indonesian Chinese
stories for the first time). Particular attention will be given to the
case of Nia Dinata and the production of PEREMPUAN PUNYA CERITA in
2007. Dinata's struggle in distributing the film commercially and her
fight with censors afford a window into the politics of post-New Order
Indonesia, where patrimonialism persists and art production remains
politicized. Finally, the 2007/2008 challenge to Indonesia’s film
censorship laws championed by the Masyarakat Film Indonesia will be
used as a litmus test for examining the strength of Indonesian civil
society and democratic reform.

Speaker Biography
Christian Razukas
