Interpretive Essay

Paul was too young to swing an axe or pull a saw all day, and besides he had decided this early that he had two major purposes in life: to fish and not to work, at least not allow work to interfere with fishing. In his teens, then, he got a summer job as a lifeguard at the municipal swimming pool, so in the early days he could look over girls in bathing suits and date them up for the late evenings. . .Early, then, he had come close to realizing life’s purposes, which did not conflict in his mind from those given in answer to the first question in the Westminster Catechism. (6-7)
("Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.")

This quote stuck in my head because I wish everyone could live their life like Paul. He had a job which the hours didn't conflict with his fishing, and also made it so he could meet girls. If everyone was like Paul, then people would be a lot more carefree and they wouldn't mind going to work everyday because they'll just be going somewhere to pretty much have fun. This quote really stuck in my head because that is the way I hope to be with my job when I'm older.

Another quote that really stuck in my head was "I am haunted by water." This quote really stuck in my head because the way that water is related to everything in this book.

When Norman speaks of water, he talks about the smoothness of it, the roughness of it, and the way that all rivers divulge into one. The smoothness of it is when everything is going fine in his life like when Jesse and her mom declare their love for him, or when he, Paul, and his father are fishing together for the last time and he realizes just how perfect Paul is and how he has mastered fishing. The roughness of it is when he knows that Jesse will be very angry with him when she finds out that him and Paul left her brother alone, or when he knows that Paul needs help but he also knows that Paul won't accept his help which ultimately results in his death. The rivers divulge into one when Norman realizes how beautifully Paul lived his life and how he fought.

Norman is haunted by water because it is everywhere around him. Fishing that Blackfoot is in his blood and all throughout his life he has related everything to the waters and that is just the way he thinks.
