A person that I look up to and has taught me a lot throughout my life is my mom. By the time she was 23 years old, she already had five daughters. She gave birth to my sister Nisa and me, and when my dad and she found out about three little girls who would be separated into different foster homes, they took my three sisters Amanda, Lela, and Alicia in as foster children and eventually adopted them. Even at such a young age she embraced the values of work and family. When I look at my mom I see everything that I want to be. When someone needs somewhere to stay until they get on their feet, my mom will offer them our home and feed them or loan them money until they can take care of themselves. She cares so much about her family and everyone around her and she is such a hard worker. I remember two summers ago she was working construction because during the school year she works for Tribal Education but during the summer she gets laid off. But she was working construction and I would wake up to her just getting home from a 14 hour shift and her just being exhausted, she didn’t complain though, she went to bed and when she woke up she went to work again for another 14 hour shift. She did this so our family could have what we have. During the school year her life consists of going to work in Pablo, going to College Board meeting as well as meetings for her own job at schools throughout the reservation. Bringing my little sister to soccer and softball practice, watching my softball games, bringing my other sisters to work, and other daily things like going to the grocery store and stuff. When she gets home she will make dinner, then sit on her chair and bead to make extra money. My mom has had such an influence on me and the way I will try to live my life. I hope that when I am older I will be as hard of a worker and as good of a mother and person as she is.
