"The 'Net is a waste of time, and that's exactly what's right about it."
William Gibson

This is a handful of web sites of interest to the club player. The list changes when people remember to edit it, roughly once a decade.

Wilhelm Steinitz

Steinitz became the first universally acknowldeged world chess champion when he beat Zukertort by 12½-7½ in 1886.

Puzzles and problems

If you have some time to spend...
  • Chess Puzzles by GMs is a large catalogue of 'play to win' positions taken from grandmaster games.
  • The Chess Tactics Server provides 23,803 tactical chess positions to test yourself against. You can join the 25,117 registered tacticians and work to improve your tactical rating.
  • For "one of the unique and subtle wonders of the Royal Game", go to the Endgame Studies section of Chess Cafe. Visit the archives for dozens more studies.
  • For the very different art of the chess problem, go to the British Chess Problem Society.

Chess organisations

FIDE, the World Chess Federation, is the international body for the regulation of chess.

The English Chess Federation oversees national matters. The site includes a list of the grades of all registered English players and a long list of tournaments

There are also details of the annual awards, including the current ECF Website of the Year (Penrith's site, in 2006, being the first).

The website of the Northern Counties Chess Union deals with chess at regional level.

The Cumbria Chess Association does the same for county activity.

In the county of Cumbria Barrow and Cockermouth clubs have their own websites. Austin Friars Chess Club (Carlisle) and Windermere have pages on the Cumbria website.
