Penrith Chess Club

"An isolated pawn spreads gloom all over the chessboard..."

Activities

The Club has a dozen or so members and on any given Club night about half a dozen or more are likely to be there. Some people use the sessions to play friendly games, others play games that they consider serious.

There are a couple of regular club competitions (see the  Club Championships page) and from time to time we have special blitz events - all moves to be played in 10 minutes or some other frenzy-inducing time limit. This is both exhausting and entertaining, and can produce some remarkable games (occasionally even for the right reasons).

Club matches

Penrith Chess Club is an active member of the Cumbria Chess League. This season 2011–2012 we have three teams: the A team in the all Cumbria Division 1 and the B and C teams in Division 2 (North).

Last year the B team won the Division 2 (North) title but lost out in a promotion battle to Barrow B, the Division 2 South Champions. The A team made yet another successful bid for mid-first-division table mediocrity by the close of play. The C team frankly took a beating but a little less of a hammering than in 2010-11 with some close results. The less said about our Whitaker Cup teams the better. Suffice it to say they were not flushed with success - with both of them heading  for an early encounter with sanitary devices. End of term report... considerable room for improvement.
