"Life's too short for chess..."
Henry James Byron (Act I "Our Boys")
The Club has two annual competitions. The main one is the Club Championship. All members are eligible to join. Generally speaking a time limit of 90 minutes per player per game is standard, though this can be varied by agreement as long as a time limit of at least 61 minutes per player per game is observed. These games can be played outside of club hours if it suits.
The Quickplay Competition is the second annual tournament. Players are allowed 30 minutes each per game. Matches are played back-to-back on club evenings.
Results are posted on the the Club Championship and Quickplay Competition tables on the website (and a paper-based record is kept at the club.)
An informal 'Blitz Challenge' (10 minutes for each player for all moves) is often played a week or two before Christmas (allegedly for fun - which just isn't what it used to be).
Quickplay Final 20010-2011
The 2010-2011 Quickplay Championship final, played on 28/7/2011, was a family affair with McAtear pitched against McAtear - with McAtear emerging as the clear winner. That is about all the suspense that can be managed ... the quickplay champion is once again the blogmeister himself Andy 'the sacrifice' McAtear. Congratulations to Andy, commiserations to Lewis.
Club Championship Report 2010-2011
And the Club Champion is (trumpets, drum roll, parade, golden chariot, laurel leaf crown of victory, Viking drinking horn of plenty, get on with it as it is getting tedious now etc, etc, etc ...) Lewis McAtear with 4 out of 5 wins. Congratulations to Lewis. Once again comisserations to Eggert who fell victim to Lewis's Scandinavian tendencies in what was effectively the play-off match betwixt them.
Club Championship Report 2011-2012
The all new, all singing, all dancing, all barely started at all 2011-2012 Club Championship is now up and running. Please let Kevin know any results so they can be posted on the website - otherwise he might start making them up as usual and who knows where that could lead?
