The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Joins Acadia Hospital in Opiate Abuse Awareness Campaign

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to join the Acadia Hospital in Bangor in sponsoring the Close to Home Campaign, designed to educate the Maine communities we serve about the dangers of opiate abuse. Close to Home is a multi-year effort that will focus this year on getting key messages out to the public. The Sheriff’s Office connects to the opiate problem at two different points.  First, deputy sheriffs investigate crimes against the person and also property crimes at an alarmingly increasing frequency as a result of our opiate problem.  Secondly, corrections officers deal with inmates addicted to opiates.  Sheriff Glenn Ross states that approximately 10% of the new arrests are addicted to heroin and another 10% to narcotic painkillers.  This is a tremendous burden on not only the families of the addicted but upon our taxpayers as well.  The Sheriffs Office is a proud partner of Acadia Hospital and we pledge our support to their campaign.

Please visit the campaign website at http://www.closetohomecampaign.org/ to learn more about the opiate problem in Maine.
