Who and what is pengi films?

pengi films is primarily a one-man outfit dedicated to using open source tools to make films.

Who Exactly?

Joe Friedrichsen

Joe is a Colorado (USA) native and computer enthusiast. He has a small garden and a smaller turtle in his home in Japan.

How Exactly?

On a cool November day in 2004, Aroop Roy convinced me to apply for a research grant through the Suruga Institute. The gifted musician that he is, Aroop chose to propose a music and culture exchange with India. Starved for ideas, I landed on a documentary when Aroop suggested researching tea. We each wrote our grant proposals and waited to hear from Suruga.

In mid-January, I received a letter from the Suruga Institute saying that my application had been accepted. Shortly following the award ceremony in February, I chose the name pengi films after my favorite animal and software development model.

Are You Serious?

Yes, I think. I hadn't made a film, programmed any distributed software, or done sponsored research before this fortunate episode. This is all very new to me, and so I'm not trying to take it too seriously (although I would like to have a more-or-less professional appearance).

Can I Contact You?

Sure! I'd love to hear feedback about anything you see or read from pengi films. Even grammar and spelling corrections are welcome. Please write to:

Thanks for your time and consideration!
