A Message From the Arobryn

Greetings to the populace

It is my pleasure and great honour this year to be running the Arobryn Championship. As most of you are aware I am the current Arobryn Champion having held this title for almost 2 years.

The Arobryn Championship is one of the biggest Arts & Sciences events in WA. It is an opportunity for all of us to show the vast talents of the populace.

The A&S competitions will be run on the Sunday morning of the Pencampwr weekend. The winners will be announced that evening. Please be aware that due to the long period of time required to judge the entries, we will be closing entries by 11 AM on Sunday to ensure that all judging is completed in plenty of time for the set up of the feast. Any entries received after this time will not be accepted. If you will be unable to be present by 11 AM I recommend you ask someone else to submit your works - you may print off the
Kingdom A&S Competition Entry Form from and complete one form for each entry beforehand. If you are at the event then I will have copies of these forms available to be completed on the day.

If you do not wish to enter the Arobryn Championship competition please also be aware that there is an individual A&S competition running concurrently with the championship and for which all Arobryn entries are eligible. Thus two winners are announced - the person with the highest individual score and the Arobryn Champion with the highest 3 scores in 3 separate skill sets. These may be the same person.

Scoring is done along the lines of Kingdom A&S competitions. Providing relevant documentation will help bolster your overall score, but it is only 1 element of several. See
Kingdom of Lochac Arts and Sciences page for further details.

If you have any questions regarding the Arobryn Championship please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours in Service

Entry Requirements

The purpose of the Arobryn Championship is to crown that person who has demonstrated the greatest level of skill over a variety of different areas of A&S as Champion. It is therefore not enough to simply excel at one type of skill but to demonstrate excellence across at least 3 separate areas.

In order to enter Arobryn you must have at least 3 entries. You can enter more than 3 items, but only your top 3 scores will be counted. Each entry which counts towards your over all score must cover a different skill. For example, in last years competition I entered a dress (sewing), smocking on a shirt (embroidery), strawberry brandy/strawberry tarts (cooking/brewing) and an embroidered griffin -partially finished (embroidery). In the previous year I entered a dress (sewing), embroidery on a shirt (embroidery), a french hood (sewing/hat making) and lucet cord (woodworking to make the tool and then weaving for the cord). Although there can be overlap between the different entries you must be able to show that a different skill set applies to each. I could not for example use both the sewing for the dress and sewing for the shirt to count towards my total score. In the year where I entered 2 embroidery pieces only one of these counted towards my arobryn score.

A&S skills range far beyond those skills that immediately spring to mind. Different skills count include sewing, embroidery, brewing, cooking, illumination, metalwork, woodwork, herbal products, weaving etc. And remember that something like leatherwork could include different sub-skills which would count separately (eg shoe making as opposed to leather stamping are two separate skills much like sewing and embroidery are two separate skills).

I would encourage all of you to consider entering the Arobryn Championship. Remember that items can be works in progress (i.e. unfinished) . They can also be items that you completed years earlier. Just remember though that you cannot enter something that has been entered in a higher level A&S competition (ie anything entered at a Kingdom or Baronial level).

Duties

This is not just any old A&S competition. This is a Championship for the Canton of Abertridwr. And it comes with certain responsibilities. These are as follows:

Create a work of lasting cultural significance for the group. Master Healfdene, the Arobryn Champion before myself has created a beautiful wall hanging telling the story of Abertridwr's formation through embroidery.
Create an item of regalia for the next Arobryn. This may be a perpetual item of an individual item. It is expected that this be in the form of a Cadwalder Dragon in any medium.

Last year I created 2 silk sashes to be worn by the Arobryn and Pencampwr Champions each featuring a painted Cadwalder Dragon. This year I will be creating further items.
