The first International Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy was organised in Geneva in 1955. A series of four such Conferences provided one of the most comprehensive coverages, on all aspects of nuclear energy development and deployment, that have been seen thus far. Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the founder of the Indian Atomic Energy Programme, was the President of the first Conference. The year 2009 is the Birth Centenary year of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha. As a part of the year-long programme to commemorate the occasion, an International Conference on Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy – 2009 will be organised by the Indian Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), jointly with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Indian Nuclear Society (INS). With a backdrop of the progress made in the last five decades, this Conference will aim at discussing options that would contribute to developing a future road-map for the growth of nuclear energy and its peaceful applications.
