Step 2: Alternative Policies

Researching and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of alternative policies is an essential step in Project Citizen.
Alternative policies should include existing policies in other schools, cities, states, or countries.
These existing policies can be researched and analyzed before selecting the best policy in the next step.
Here are a few documents and links to help students find real alternative policies and analyze their advantages and disadvantages.

When using a search engine like Google or Bing to search the web for alternative policies, try the following key words along with your problem.

Alternative Policy Documents

Students use this handout to take notes about each alternative policy that they find in their research. Each student should find at least one alternative policy and complete this handout individually. Then students use these notes to share their alternative policies with their group in the next activity.

After each student finds an alternative policy and completes the note-taking handout above, students share their findings in groups to complete this chart.

This outline and rubric helps students write their individual Alternative Policy Summaries. This can be an individual graded assessment based on their research, group work, and discussions so far.
