PAWS for Reading
PAWS for Reading is a program that allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog (or cat) in order to improve reading and communication skills. Children read individually to trained therapy pets (and their handlers) in schools, libraries, or other setttings where they can feel comfortable and confident -- and have fun! After all, a dog will not correct them or make them feel awkward if they stumble.
(PAWS for Reading requires Advanced Level STEX and a PAWS for Reading Basic Training.)
PAWS for Reading PLUS is a more involved version of PAWS for Reading. The one-on-one format is the same, as is the focus on providing each reader with a positive reading experience. The PLUS teams, however, have attended an Advanced Reading Training session, equipping them with the skills and techniques necessary to offer our struggling readers greater support in their literacy development.
(PAWS for Reading PLUS requires Advanced Level STEX, PAWS for Reading Basic Training, and PAWS for Reading PLUS Advanced Training.)
