Paul D. Werner, Ph.D. is a Professor in the clinical psychology Ph.D. program at the San Francisco Bay campus of the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) of Alliant International University. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1976 in psychology of personality from the psychology department of the University of California at Berkeley, where he worked at the Institute of Personality Assessment and Research (now the Institute of Personality and Social Research). Prior to joining CSPP in 1982, he served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Rutgers University, as an Associate Research Psychologist at American Institutes for Research, and as a Research Psychologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA. Dr. Werner is a licensed psychologist in the state of California. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Personality Assessment, and the Western Psychological Association.

Research Activities

Dr. Werner's research activities include the following:

• Family assessment: He is the co-author of the California Inventory for Family Assessment (CIFA). Research using the CIFA concerns the underlying elements of family relations, across diverse families, and their relationship to outcomes in areas such as health and delinquency.
• Research on Music Experience: He is the co-author of the Music Experience Questionnaire (MEQ). Research using the MEQ concerns the dimensions of reactions to music (such as the importance of music in one's life), and their relationship to outcomes in areas such as depression and the experience of well-being.
• Research on clinical decision making about dangerousness: Dr. Werner and his colleagues have conducted a number of studies concerning decision making about violent behavior. Topics covered include agreement among clinical decision makers' forecasts of dangerousness, accuracy of such forecasts, and the similarities between decision making by professional and nonprofessional evaluators.
• Research on population and family planning. Dr. Werner and his colleagues have conducted studies on attitudes, beliefs, and activism concerning abortion, decision making about use of contraceptives, and decision making about family size.
• Other research activities: Dr. Werner, with his students, and colleagues, has conducted research on a variety of topics concerning personality assessment, gender roles, and antisocial behavior.

These research activities have led to publication of over 30 papers in professional books and journals.

Consulting Activities

Dr. Werner's consulting activities include the following:
