Clay is my chosen medium for sculpture and hand built vessels about people and the creatures in my world. Like candid photography, the work captures fleeting expression, gesture and movement, a glimpse of a larger story. These themes unite the seemingly disparate bodies of work: from the loose, organic, wood fired pieces to the whimsical and colorful sculpture from the electric kiln. I've drawn faces and figures since I could hold a crayon and I can't seem to stop. Plan A in college was an art major, but psychology was compelling. After moving to Oregon, and establishing both a therapy practice and a family, I found my way back to art, through clay. My art education has consisted of community college classes, workshops, and much trial and error,
surrounded by a supportive community of artists.
I work in clay at home, in Corvallis, Oregon. I'll jump for opportunities to fire in atmospheric kilns, my favorite being the Alsea Anagama in which a natural ash glaze enhances the forms and brings out color reminiscent of desert rock and landscapes. My current challenge is to create interesting surfaces on the pieces I fire in my electric kiln.
Whatever life presents eventually shows up in the work. Much of it is personal narrative, some pure fantasy. Time in the wilderness watching tree frogs up close with my family and collecting wild mushrooms led to both of their appearance on the pots. Traveling in the deserts of the southwestern US inspired the “red rock” sculpture. The privilege of sitting with people in therapy fills me with wonder about the human experience, the unifying theme.
I belong to the Oregon Potter’s Association and the Willamette Ceramics Guild, showing work through these affiliations as well as in local and regional galleries. I've maintained a private practice as a psychotherapist since 1985. I'm incredibly grateful to have found deeply satisfying work in both arenas.
