God's Own Heart"

It should be the desire of every true Christian man to be

"a man after God's own heart!"

In this day of men who will dedicate themselves to less than worthy goals for their lives (playing video games all night and day, giving themselves to their work while God's work goes undone, being seduced by pleasure, money, power, or popularity, etc.) how we need to rise up to the goals that Christ gave His life upon the cross to purchase for us!

The goal of this men's Bible study is to take a walk with David and learn from his experience what it takes to be "a man after God's own heart." Any one who has read in the Old Testament of David's life will know that he was not a perfect man. And yet he was given this commendation by God. Did that mean that everything David did was approved by God? Of course not! Sin is sin regardless of who commits it. And yet as we study David's life, noting his successes as well as his failures, we can learn how to better become men of whom God is willing to say are "men after My own heart!"

You can approach this as a daily personal devotional study guide or as a lesson plan for a small men's Bible study group. If you use this for a group study please let me know that you are doing this so I can rejoice with you.

You can view the list of individual studies here but you will not be permitted to use them until you have completed all the prior studies leading up to it.

As you complete the first study, for example, you will be sending your answers (in e-mail form) and upon review of your answers, you will receive a link to the next study, etc.

Note: Just as we cannot "see ahead" in our own lives, so David could not "see ahead" in his own life. So in order to understand properly what it means to be "a man after God's own heart" one must "walk moment by moment in David's shoes (or sandals!) If one gives into the temptation to "look ahead" whether it be the next verse or chapter, you will miss out on some truth that you must deal with.

True, God "sees ahead" but we do not, and neither did David. The tendency to view David's life by looking at it from the perspective of the end of his life is like knowing the end of a story before you read it! And in real life, NO ONE knows the end of the story. And so we have to make choices and decisions without the benefit of "knowing the rest of the story!" David did, too! So please, don't "jump ahead" and draw conclusions that David himself could not draw when he made his "moment by moment" decisions.

Also: Before answering any questions, first look for the OBVIOUS answer in the Bible verse you are asked to read. We are NOT interested, first of all, in your opinion. AFTER you have given the "obvious" answer can you give thoughts or opinions that are in line with God's truth and perspective.

Begin every lesson with prayer. The Bible opens its truths to honest and humble hearts. If you approach it with the attitude "I already know what it says" chances are you will not be open to learning anything of help. And it is in prayer that one expresses this humbleness and will receive the help of the Holy Spirit, both in understanding and in the ability to apply it to one's life.
