Principles of Effective Treatment

Scientific research since the middle of the 1970s shows that treatment can help patients addicted to drugs stop using, avoid relapse and successfully recover a higher quality of life. Based on the research, there are key principles that form the basis of any effective treatment program. Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that affects brain function and behavior. No single treatment is appropriate for everyone.

Treatment needs to be readily available. Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just centered on drug abuse. Remaining in treatment for an adequate period is critical. Counseling in individual and or group settings and other behavioral therapies are the most commonly used forms of drug abuse treatment. Medications are an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies. A team of experts must continually assess and modify the treatment and services plan of any patient to ensure that it meets the changing needs of the patient.

One of the most powerful aspects of the Passages Malibu program, in addition to the entire one on one therapy, is that the experts work as a team. The Passages Team Approach includes nine therapists who work with each patient every week. At the conclusion of each week, patients meet with the founder and son, along with the treatment team, to review the information of the week and shape a treatment plan for the upcoming week based specifically on the needs of the individual. As a team, the experts at Passages Malibu aim to have patients totally healed.
