A sample depicting a typical fine sunny day’s flight training noise pollution from Parafield Airport. For those who cannot comprehend what hundreds of overflights means, listen to all of these annoying sounds while trying to concentrate on something else, or while trying to sleep after shiftwork. About 80% of overflights were recorded. This sample set of recordings was recorded in a private suburban residential backyard established in the 1970’s, about 4Km away from Parafield runways, ~200 metres from a primary school and child care centres.
 
These recordings are abbreviated, the waxing and waning of the aircrafts’ drone lasts much longer. The time stamps show that at best a couple of instances occurred where there was 15-20 minutes respite from continuous noise. Hardly time to enjoy a quiet cuppa, let alone a meal. Each overflight traverses over 10,000 to 20,000 residential homes, several child care centres, and a few schools – done at Parafield so that foreign interests merely can enjoy our city’s lifestyle without too much inconvenience! The worst affected areas are over public housing, one established in the 1980’s, (NW of Parafield), the other 1960’s (SW of Parafield).
 
Most overflights’ noise exceeds 75 decibels on the ground. The newer ‘quiet’ planes’ noise also masks a lawnmower’s noise to the person using it. One can pick the newer Diamond aircraft’s extra thrashing noise quality, (eg V0911006 & V0911047), while the Tobago (eg V0911014 or V09110018) emits a droneier boom. Both cause sickening resonances inside solid reflective structures/dwellings. Almost all homes built during the 1960-70’s around Parafield were of solid brick construction. V0911074 captures a Diamond, large passenger jet and a Tobago traversing our once quiet neighbourhood at the same time. Commercial jets were hardly seen over Salisbury as they used to avoid urban areas, flying over nearby sea. Since the leasing of Adelaide Airport, (by same parent company that leases Parafield Airport), Commercial passenger jets now pollute straight over Salisbury daily, starting at ~0630.
 
Flight training at Parafield often exceeds 1000 overflights per day. 1500-2000 daily overflights have occurred over the same homes where buzy flight training paths intersect!!! We are unaware of any compensation/insulation offered to those unfortunate households – the ‘authorities’ refuse to acknowledge a problem.
