“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul”
Mozambique is one of Africa’s undiscovered jewels. As well as over 2,700km of palm-fringed coastline, the country boasts many stunning game parks, lakes, mountains and historical towns. Cultural and geographic diversity make Mozambique a much desired tourism destination.
At Mwedje Eco-Lodge the stage is set for guests to enjoy a quintessential Indian Ocean island holiday in one of the best and most valuable positions in Africa. Inhassoro is a gateway to the pristine beauty of the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park, one of the largest reserves on the Indian Ocean. The area is a haven for well-to-do sunseekers, nature lovers, honeymooners and adventurers. Well-known visitors include members of the British and Dutch royal families, and celebrities seeking an exquisite, private hideaway, where the most stressful decision is which of the many exciting activities to undertake.
Typical activities include romantic walks and picnics on secluded beaches, dhow safaris, ocean kayaking, sailing, horse riding, bird watching, cultural excursions, quad biking, whale watching, diving and snorkeling on reefs and ancient wrecks, and sport fishing safaris.
The area offers unspoilt white beaches, warm azure water and world-class pristine coral reef. Visitors can expect to swim with elegant manta rays, turtles, dolphns and whalesharks. The Bazaruto archipelago is one of the only remaining havens in the world for the gentle dugongs classified by the IUCN Red Data List as Vulnerable. Four species of dolphin and five species of turtle are found in the area, and in the summer months humpback whales cruise past in the deeper water.
The national park is home to beautiful hard and soft corals, brightly coloured tropical fish, sea horses, triggerfish, wrass, many species of gamefish, sharks and rays. The crystal clear waters make this a perfect location for underwater photography safaris. Diving is available in depths of 1-40m, and the many shallow locations are perfect for snorkeling and trainee divers.
Mozambique offers some of the best fishing in the world, catering for deep-sea, rock, surf and fly-fishing. The Mozambique channel is famous for its trophy-sized marlin and sailfish, and is ranked as the best Black Marlin destination on the Eastern Indian Ocean. The best time for Marlin fishing is from mid September to the end of December. Sailfish fishing is from April to August and smaller game fish such as King Mackerel, Bonito, Travelli, Queen Mackerel are available all year round. "Tag and Release" fishing is the usual policy.
For birding enthusiasts, approximately 164 different birds have been identified and confirmed on and around the archipelago. More unusual birds to be seen are the green coucals, green pigeons, purple banded and black sunbirds, olive bee-eaters, mannikins, paradise fly-catchers, bartailed godwits, whimbrels and crab plovers.
Traditional life is still very important to the people of Mozambique and a rich kaleidoscope of living cultural heritage can be found. This is reflected in the rich variety of delicious local cuisine, and in music and dance. Local delicacies include many varieties of freshly caught fish, calamari, and shell fish. Ilala palms abound and the leaves are used in the weaving of handicrafts which make good souvenirs of a stay in the area. The sap from the palms is used to brew a potent liquor!
Proximity to Vilanculos International Airport with regular scheduled and charter flights means that guests can combine the tropical delights of a stay at Mwedje, with a bush experience in one of Mozambique’s national parks.
