#102-2007 October Fog 24" x 28" -Gallery wrapped canvas over hardboard
I was in Newfoundland a couple of years ago , at the time of year when the boats were being pulled out of the water for winter. This painting was done to show the fog conditions, on that fall morning, at the Pilleys Island harbour. Its very early in the morning at high tide. These houses are summer cabins . The place gets very quiet at this time of year. I hope I captured the idea in a way that you the viewer can appreciate the location and the the occasional heavy fog conditions of the Newfoundland environment.
#101-2007 - In Calm Waters - 18"x 24" - acrylic on panel
This summer I fished for cod , in Newfoundland, in an area where a lone minke whale was feeding. The water that evening was flat calm and the whale was after some sort of small fish that flickered on the water. It got close to us at times as we fished for cod. This painting tries to capture that moment in time as I remember it.
#100-2007 -Sunburst over Hay Fields- 24 "x 32"- acrylic on canvas over panel
I had been watching the farmers for a few years harvesting hay. I wanted to do a hay field with a sunburst cloud sky.
This is what I came up with.
#099-2007-Passing Sugarloaf Island - 20"x 24" acrylic on panel
On my fishing trips to Newfoundland we often pass Surgarloaf Island . This rock in the sea has stood the test of time. For thousands of years it as been battered by wind, rain and ice but its hold is not broken. Generations of people come and go but the earth remains.
#098-2007- Passage in Time - acrylic on panel
We will all hang up our hats for the last time some day. Grandfather left behind traces of his passage in his small fishing stage in Newfoundland . The items in this painting tell the story of his life. The hat was his favourite during the last years of his life. The kettle would have been used on an outing at the cabin . The buoy was from one of his traps . The matches would have been kept in a dry location. The cod jigger is the kind he used all his life. The snare was used to catch rabbits. The axe handle end is painted red so it would not get lost in the woods.
