Syllabus 7/8c

Most important expectation:   Since this is a 4th year class, the students must maintain “the language pledge ”, meaning that during the class period, they will speak only in Spanish to the best of their ability.

Preferred behavior:  All students are expected to comply with the behavior code established by whhs. Behaving well means acting respectfully at all times. If  not, there will be consequences…including serious ones such as a lowered grade, depending on the infraction.  Respect is demonstrated by doing the following:

•    Paying close attention in class (maintaining silence when      others speak)
•    Being cooperative (following instructions)
•    Being considerate (kind, sensitive and honest)
•    Not eating, drinking nor chewing gum in class (nothing in      the mouth that impedes clear speech)
•    Coming to class on time, prepared with all necessary             items, and seated by the bell.
•    Not cheating/copying

Grading:
        scale:                            grades include:
        90-100=a                    basic requirements—50%
        80-89=b                      homework, exams-----25%
        70-79=c                       active participation---25%
        60-69=d                                                         ---------
        00-59=f                                                           100%

Basic requirements of the class-50%:  Each semester the students will have to do:

•    1  web research paper
•    Various presentations, either individual, with partner or         with group
•    1 essay
•    1 poetic translation

Homework and exams-25%:  The students will have homework daily except for Fridays and will have quizzes periodically.

Active participation-25%:  is obligatory at this level. Active participants are students who do more than sit back and absorb information. They are responsible, curious, prepared, motivated and dedicated learners. They are in charge of much of their own learning; they are attentive, ask questions, make comments toward class discussion, risk themselves in order to communicate. The bottom line is, they put forth a great effort to speak only in Spanish!

Materials necessary for class:

•    loose leaf lined paper without fringe
•    pee chee folder or small notebook used only for this class
•    bilingual dictionary by “Collins” or “Larousse”.  Be                 careful of electronic translators.  They are very often             unreliable and they are considered a form of cheating.
