Buffalo River Fall Colors Float

Five members of the 1492 - 2009 flotilla brigade
set out to make a pilgrimage down the Buffalo National River.
The weekend started with a pilot group spearheading the camp/recon
portion of  the trip.   Arriving at Buffalo Point Campground, they were met
by locals and a few hardy travelers camped beside the swollen river. The river was receiving the brunt of a 3 inch rain that fell upstream the day before.

This is the view from the launch ramp at Buffalo Point.  The river was 100 yards wide and brown as chocolate.

It had dropped about two feet from the evening before.

Driving around the two campgrounds, a distinct division in style of camping was observed.   One camp had $40-$80,000 travel trailers, and the other had multiple rebel flags flapping in the breeze.  Since we didn't fall into either group a decision was made to split the difference and camp directly between the two.
When the final participant arrived the following morning the boats were hauled down to the launch point and loaded.  We rigged to go big as the river was in "flood" stage.  There was no other traffic on the river as the outfitters were shut down due to river levels.   Even driving around the campground, the only other boats were the lead sleds tied to the tree next to the campground hosts trailer.

We got several "What the hell are you doing" looks from the other campers as we loaded the boats.

We took off into the swift liquid caramel and began a three day pilgrimage to the White river 31 miles down stream.   To read more and see a slide show of the rest of the weekend follow link below.
