Bee Garden

The Pacifica 4-H Bee Garden project focuses on urban horticulture and seeks to educate club members and their community about the benefits of providing habitats for pollinators (primarily native bees). Our garden serves as a demonstration of how gardens can be utilized as a practical solution to mitigate the California native bee population decline.

The goal of the Bee Garden project is to get youth turned on to gardening and raise awareness of the importance of California native bees, their decline, and their role in ecological functions. We also facilitate youth development by building a sense of environmental stewardship through the creation of California native bee habitats. To accomplish these goals we have researched the flora and fauna of the area, designed a bee garden around that knowledge, and developed a strong environmental education program. We focus on experiential education, so the project members play an integral part in the planning, development, and maintenance of the project, while preforming the bulk of the physical garden preparation.

The Pacifica 4-H Bee Garden Project was the California 4-H 2006 Golden Clover Award Winner for Collaboration.
