Meetings

2008-2009 Meetings

General Meeting Information
Dog Project meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month, from September through June, at the Olivenhain Town Hall from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.  You must be enrolled in the Olivenhain Valley 4-H Club to attend any dog project meetings.  Enrollment in this project is capped at 30 members for safety reasons.

Important:  Parents of primary-aged members (children under the age of 9) should be aware that, per 4-H Policy, their attendance is mandatory.  Parents of members who bring their own dog are required to attend as well.  All other parents are requested to attend and help with crafts, games, and other activities.

Attention New Members
You are not required to own or bring a  dog to meetings.  Judy brings her professionally trained dogs to all meetings and they are available to all members to use.  If you are new to the dog project in 2009-2010 and would like to bring your dog, you will need to get your dog certified before bringing it - Dog Certification information is listed below.  Please let Judy know of your intention so she can discuss this with you and set you up for a certification meeting.  For safety purposes, we limit the number of dogs that can attend meetings.  Remember, should you want to participate in any of this year's dog shows you can do so by using one of Judy's dogs.

Attention Returning Members
Members that brought their certified dog to meetings last year need not re-certify that dog.  If you would like to bring a different dog, it will need to be certified.

Dog Certification

Members are required to attend a minimum of two Dog Project meetings, wherein they will work with Judy's dogs, before requesting to bring their personal dog.  A member should speak with Judy directly regarding bringing their dog before doing so as she may request that the child gain more experience, with her well-trained dogs,  before taking on greater responsibility.   All dogs must be certified and up-to-date on their shots before attending a meeting.  Certification is NOT held every month.  Junior and Teen Leaders assist Judy with the club's canine good citizen testing, so scheduling can be an issue.  For testing, the participating dog must be handled confidently by the child, not the parent.  The dog need not be highly trained, but it must be well-behaved and sociable.  Puppies are not permitted in the program.

How Can You Help

  1. Sign up to bring treats to a meeting. At the beginning of the year, a snack list will be developed.  One child will provide drinks and snacks for the group for their meeting.
  2. Each June, we host a year-end party with games, prizes and treats.  Parents that did not bring a snack will be asked to provide these items.
  3. Be a Team Leader for our Skill-A-Thon.  Each year, we put on this event at a regular meeting.  Basically, four to six learning centers are established so that kids can rotate through them, building their dog knowledge in a fun atmosphere.  One adult leader is needed to assist each team.
  4. Be a safety monitor or a craft assistant.  We often run activities inside the Town Hall at the same time dog training is taking place outside.  Six or so parents are always needed to set-up/break-down and assist with the craft.  Parents observing training are asked to be prepared to assist Junior and Teen Leaders should the Adult Leader need to go inside.
  5. Prep craft items.  Each year our project makes and sells dog toys in a local craft fair to raise money.  It is the Dog Projects goal to purchase agility equipment.  You can donate fabric or help cut the donated fabric into strips.
