Each November, the town of Olivenhain hosts a Craft Fair at the Olivenhain Town Hall. Our 4-H club runs a booth which sells food and craft items produced by our members. The Dog Group makes dog toys for the club to sell. This is the only Club fundraiser held during the year, so your participation is vital. Members who volunteer in the booth earn Community Service points for their record book. Each year, the Dog Group makes a group presentation to our Club at a General Meeting on our assigned Demonstration Day. The presentation materials, a poster and notecards, are developed during our project meeting. Members also have the opportunity to practice this short, two or three sentence speech, in front of our group to build their confidence. Members who participate in this event earn Presentation points for their record book. San Diego County 4-H Dog Advisory Events Learning Day is held in March and is a combined educational and show event. Dogs can be entered into showmanship or obedience classes. Only Project Dogs may participate and each Project Dog must have a ID number, assigned by Judy. Entry forms are listed in the County 4-H Memos Newsletter delivered via email each month. You can find the latest copy on the County 4-H web site. Additional 4-H Dog Shows are held in the months of April, May and June, with the grand finale being participation in the Del Mar fair, held at the end of June. The information listed above applies. San Diego County 4-H Events Area 3 Presentation Day is generally held each February and gives 4-H members the opportunity to complete a timed speech or demonstration. It is open to junior and senior members - primary members are too young to compete, but may attend. Participants compete against members of other clubs from Area 3 in different categories including audio-visual presentation, impromptu speech, educational display and prepared speech. Dog Project members are encouraged to choose a dog care and training topic. We welcome participants to practice their topic on our group at one of our dog meetings. If you need suggestions on topics or materials to use in preparing your presentation, please see Judy. Entry forms for this event are included in the monthly 4-H Memos Newsletter which is emailed through the County Extension Office. Archived copies can be found on their web site. Judging Day is generally held in April. The objective of judging in the 4-H program is to help members grow in their ability to think, to reason, and to make logical and scientific judgments. Judging is making choices and decisions. For example, if 4-H Dog Group members know what factors make up an ideal dog, they are more able to recognize a top quality dog, to know good standards, and make wise decisions based on facts. Judging is an everyday activity. In 4-H, judging is essentially a matter of comparing four items. At Judging Day, attendees will read and review posters created by project groups from throughout San Diego County. Participants will then evaluate the entries and award ribbons based on categories. Each year, our Dog Group develops a demonstration and poster on a specific dog-related topic. After the group presents the information to our club, the poster is entered into the Judging Day competition. Project members should plan on attending Judging Day to not only see their work compete, but to also learn how to be a judge. The Olivenhain Valley 4-H Dog Project is a part of the Olivenhain Valley
