David Lescht (February 12, 1948 – May 4, 2012)

David Lescht, founder and Director of Outside In Productions and the Santa Fe Bandstand, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on May 4th, 2012. David’s passing is an enormous loss.  His work touched thousands of people, bringing music, hope, and a greater sense of community to us all.  David is remembered, as his New Mexican obituary states, as a kind, humble, and selfless person, who said, with typical understatement, “I just try to bring a little light into dark places.”

We are shocked and deeply saddened by David’s death, and we join with his family and many friends in mourning his passing, celebrating his remarkable life, and honoring his legacy by continuing this important work.

OUTSIDE IN teachers are inside everyday of the week, teaching people to play guitar, hip hop dance and learn the valuable skill of expressing themselves through the arts. Without this outlet many of the men and women they work with would be without hope. OUTSIDE IN is a non-profit, community-based organization established in 1995 to bring free, live, professional music, dance and other artistic presentations to people who are confined in shelters, residential treatment facilities, correctional facilities, and nursing homes in New Mexico and who do not otherwise have access to the Arts.

Our mission is to alleviate suffering, lift the spirits, and ease the loneliness and sense of abandonment that is so common among confined and institutionalized populations, through access to the performing arts by providing a continuous series of live performances and presentations. We also seek to educate, inspire and empower troubled and high-risk youth by offering them continuous arts workshops and instruction.

A major focus of Outside In is our Youth With Promise program, which offers weekly art, music and dance educational workshops for high-risk youth, juvenile offenders, and other underserved youth.
