Concetta Buzzeo Massarella
Concetta was born in Settefrati, Italy. Arrived in the US on May 26, 1893 at the age of 29 on board the Kronprinz Frededrich Wilhelm. It was common practice at the time for women to travel using their maiden names. She was married to Gaetano Massarella and the mother of Colomba, Anthony, Addolorata, Rosina and Alfonsa. She couldn't read or write and spoke only in Italian. According to the census, she had also given birth to 2 children who died young, possibly at birth.
Concetta died at 5316 104th Street, Corona, Queens, NY. Her grandaughter Marie remembers her as a small lady who loved wine. She also recalls a time when she heard someone singing out in the street. It was an old suitor from Italy and Concetta was standing at the window looking out at him. When Marie asked about it all she said was, "Aye, yi, yi.", like he was an annoyance...but she had a huge smile on her face. Concetta holding grandaughter Marie.
