introduction

The Oxford University Malaysian and Singaporean Students Association (OUMSSA) was established for the following purposes:

  1. To promote interest in and understanding of the unique identities of Singapore and/or Malaysia;
  2. To provide information and support to Malaysians and Singaporeans who are studying at, or desire to pursure an education at the University of Oxford.
OUMSSA seeks to achieve these aims through the organisation of numerous events throughout the academic year, including talks, forums and seminars, and through frequent collaboration with other societies of the University of Oxford as well as our counterparts in other universities throughout the United Kingdom and beyond.

OUMSSA provides support for those who might find living abroad a new and intimidating experience. We unite Singaporeans, Malaysians and all those interested in Singapore and/or Malaysia in Oxford around communal activities such as the Chinese New Year dinner, and keep them engaged in and informed of important issues taking place at home, through events such as the Oxford Singapore Forum and the Tsunami Aid Concert, which raised funds for victims of the Asian Tsunami disaster. We also had a collection for the Indonesian Earthquake relief effort by the Singapore Red Cross.

Some of the societies we have been privileged to have worked with include the Oxford Union, OU Asia-Pacific Society (OUAPS), OU Hong Kong Society (OUHKS), OU Japanese Society (OUJS), OU Thai Society (OUTS), Asian Charities Target (ACT) as well as the Singaporean and/or Malaysian Societies of Cambridge University, University College London, the London School of Economics and the University of Nottingham.

OUMSSA is run by an executive committee which is elected annually at the end of Hilary Term, the second of three terms in the academic year at the University of Oxford. The Committee consists of 8 members: the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and 4 Committee Members.
