Money meet mouth.

Give me an OS X sidebar already.

For the last year I have been whining about the lack of sidebar app for the Mac. People have suggested that I use Amnesty and pin Dashboard widgets to the desktop. I think that is a craptastic solution and have told them so. I'm sick of griping about it and I want my sidebar so the time has come to pony up the money for it. If you'd like a friggin' sidebar in OS X already, please vote in the poll, Digg this, and/or contribute to the fund.

This pot of money (as well as the domain name osxsidebar.com) will go to whichever developer or team makes a good, open source, OS X sidebar. A good sidebar is defined by me as such:

  • Will dock to the side of my screen.
  • Will allow me to add dashboard widgets to it.
  • Will allow me to interact with said widgets.
  • Will be resizeable.
  • Will work in Tiger and Leopard
  • Will not include advertisements.
  • Will be Open Source with code freely available.

Those qualities will get you whatever is in this pot of money. Personally though, I am a fan of greatness. A great sidebar app will include the following:

  • Ability to customize appearance (think Adium)
  • Can use web based widgets as well
  • Will work in Panther too.

For greatness the pot will be sweetened with an extra $250 USD from my own pocket.
