Common Ground

What is Common Ground?

Common Ground is a large-scale outdoor slide show event and global meet-up celebrating and sponsored by many of the institutions within the Commons on Flickr. This event will consist of a projection onto the participating Commons institution’s building at night (or suitable day-time location) using a slide show of content from The Commons that is curated by you, our community.

This event will be hosted on October 2nd and 3rd, 2009, across the globe. Behind the scenes, the institutional brains of the Commons will make The Commons on Flickr go live through a connected slide show, and you will get to participate in the world’s first crowd-sourced curation of publicly held archives, released with No Known Copyright Restrictions! And, best of all, it's a chance to meet the staff behind the OSU Flickr Commons -- and a chance for us to get to know you.

Thanks for voting on the slide show it is now currently being prepared for the Common Ground event. Now we can’t wait to meet you!

As a Commons member institution, the OSU Archives is hosting this event with a slideshow on the side of Kidder Hall - which everyone knows housed the library until 1963! Look for the show (and us) on the south side of Kidder Hall, the building on the north side of the Library Quad, on Friday October 2nd, 5 to 9pm.

What to expect? What’s happening? Want the specifics? Want ideas?

This is an open and free event similar to an open-air cinema experience -- think drive-in without the sound, or cars, or a motion picture.

You need to bring something comfortable to sit on if you'd like to stay for the whole loop -- 25 images from 27 Archives, Libraries, and Museums from around the world.

Hungry? Check out food options on campus or local eateries on Monroe Avenue.

We're Oregonians! If it rains on the night the event will still happen, so look for us under the rain tent!

So what is The Commons again?

It is a program with two main objectives: to increase access to publicly-held photography collections and to provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge to these collections. To learn more, please visit The Commons page at http://www.flickr.com/commons/.
