Saint Anne's, Northampton, celebrate Patronal festival with Archbishop Gabriel On the 10th of Dec 2011, the parish of St Anne in Northampton welcomed Archbishop Gabriel to their annual patronal festival, in order to ordain James Burns to the Holy Diaconate. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Archbishop Gabriel at 11am on Saturday, attended by 6 priests, Hierodeacon Athanasius from the Cathedral in Paris and two choirs, one from the UK and a childrens choir from Romania, during which James was ordained. The was followed by a parish lunch for 100 people and a vespers. In the evening, the Youth Choir of the Orthodox Fellowship of St John the Baptist was joined by the childrens choir from Maramures in Romania for a candelit evening of hymns and carols in the 1000year old circular Holy Sepulchre church in Northampton. The live concert was recorded and will be published as a CD to raise money for the parish and for the Fellowship choir. In addition a cake and icons sales was held to raise money for the Greek Archdiocese Youth camp whose camp equipment had been recently lost due to arson. On Sunday morning, Archbishop Gabriel and Hierodeacon Athanasius were driven to Clapham by Father Timothy where they celebrated the Liturgy with the parish of Ss Peter and Paul. The priest in charge, Father Timothy would like to thank all those who contributed to such a beautiful day of worship and song- the flower arrangers, those who sang, those who fed us and those who tidied up afterwards. It was a joy to welcome our beloved Archbishop to our little parish. |

Today (8th Dec) some sixth formers studying history came to visit St Anne's to talk about the reforms of the Russian church by Peter the Great. We had a wide ranging discussion about 'symfonia', or in the words of Weber 'caesaropapism' where there is a tension between the state and church. We explored the ancient history of the church in Russia and how the roots of the reform are rooted in the development of the tsarist mentality out of the emperors of Kyiv.
The visit seemed to go well, Mrs Gillam, one of the teachers said "We have got back to school buzzing with thoughts and a burgeoning understanding of the Russian Orthodox Church furnished largely by yourself. The whole visit was illuminating, serene, and very much enhanced by your super presentation. Your time and efforts are much appreciated. I imagine that the students will no longer see Peter's reforms as merely practical and superficial, which they might have argued beforehand!"
We at St Anne's are just happy to be the focal point of such interesting discussions and thank the sixth formers for their interest and informed questions. |

It is the Akthist that is sung on the 1st of September each year during prayers for the preservation of the environment, instituted by Patriarch Bartholomew in 1989. Father Timothy participated in the Orthodox Youth festival again this year, hosting the 'hot potatoes' session and a plenary talk summing up the speakers at the festival. Honoured speakers were Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia, Dimitri Conomos, Fr Stephen Platt, Priestmonk Melchisedek and Fr Gregory Hallam. The hot potatoes session is where participants at the festival can ask (anonymously) any question of faith and morals they like and the gathered speakers (and other leaders) will answer as honestly and frankly as they can. The discussions remain confidential to the group. This allows a high level of honesty and authenticity in the responses given to the young people who attend, and who often want to go beyond the 'spiritual' answer.
