Origin of Beethoven's MLS

New York Dramatic Mirror, February 13, 1909, p. 12.

The Edison studio has produced a vey creditable piece of work in this picture, quite in harmony with the high character of the subject. We believe it could have been shortened with distinct advantage to the interest of the story, particularly in the scene showing the home of the poor shoemaker and his blind sister before the story connects them with Beethoven, but the picture is so good in other respects that we are likely to forget this apparent padding of the film to bring it up to a full reel. As the story goes, Beethoven, after struggling at his work one night with little success, took a moonlight walk with a friend and heard someone playing one of his compositions. Investigating, he found it to be the blind sister of a poor shoemaker. Seating himself at the piano he played for the girl, and when the candle was accidentally extinguished he declined to have it relit, but played on by moonlight, improvising to make her understand the beauty of the moonlight which his eyes could never see. The poetical nature of the story is cleverly and intelligently brought out by the Edison players, the character of Beethoven being especially well done.

SUM:    "Beethoven is equally remarkable for two qualities, eloquence of expression and beauty of form, which in his best work are always held in an  exact and firmly controlled ballance.  If we would fully understand his  supremacy, we must perceive not only his achievements in both directions, but  the high artistic power with which he correlates them.  Music lovers will  enjoy seeing this beautiful picture showing the great master 'in his habit as  he lived', and following his footsteps on the night when, moved by pity, he was  inspired to compose, for a poor blind girl, his immortal 'Moonlight Sonata'.
Wandering one evening, alone, through the streets, his attention was attracted by the notes of one of his own compositions, rendered in a masterly manner, and, upon inquiry, he found that the player was a poor blind girl.  Entering the humble home, he found the beautiful musician, the devoted  sister of a loving brother, he a mender of shoes, she a pianist - both  well-bred, refined and of lofty ideals.       Without revealing himself, Beethoven, learning from the fair musician's lips that she was an ardent admirer of his music - moved by the environment and charm of the evening - sat down at the piano and improvised.  The beauty of the night, the moonlight, the breathless attention of his hearers, his sympathy, all combined to inspire a masterpiece which thousands have enjoyed since that fateful evening when an accidental turn brought to life the 'Moonlight Sonata'."
