Little League Baseball Program
The OLLB operates a complete Little League baseball program for young people ages 4 through 18. Our divisions are similar to those operated by Little League organizations around the World, and include the following age groupings:
Tee-Ball: 5 - 6 years The Challenger Division is for boys and girls ages 4 to 18+ who are unable to play regular Little League baseball due to physical and /or mental challenges. No matter what the challenge, all are welcome. The OLLB baseball programme is made up of two distinct activities: the Instructional Season and the Competitive Season programmes.
Our Instructional Season Program
The Instructional Season program begins as soon as the fields are dry enough to play, and includes all players who register. This Program consists of 12 to 14 games and ends with a weekend tournament. League play begins around May 1st and matches teams against others of similar strengths. Teams are organized in mid-April (The Draft) under the guidance of the Player Agent, the Manager - Coaching and the Convenors of each Division who attempt to balance strengths and weaknesses. New players are evaluated in a short session before the draft, and returning players are evaluated based on their previous performance. If noticeable imbalances exist, the Convenors can make further adjustments during the first week of play (which is played without uniforms to simplify this process). The usual schedule for Instructional Season teams will see each team play two games per week during the evening (5:45 p.m. for teams up to age 12) and practice once on the weekend. All games and practices take place on diamonds within the OLLB area.
Our Competitive Season Program
Once the Instructional Season ends, OLLB encourages all youngsters who are interested to try out for the competitive teams at their age level. Tryouts are held to give everyone the opportunity to demonstrate their skills to the competitive team managers. Competitive Managers are appointed by the Board based on recommendations made by a selection committee. The decision is based on the applicants’ previous baseball managing experience, their knowledge of the game, and their ability to work with youngsters at the age level for which they have applied. The Competitive schedule begins in the first week of July and continues until the Labour Day weekend. The Competitive Season includes approximately 30-35 games, including 2 games per week against teams from across Ottawa, and usually 3-4 weekend tournaments often held elsewhere in Ontario or Quebec. Teams are self-financed; in addition to Little League fees, the cost per player can range from $100 to $300.
