Orion Harriers’ youngsters were out in force last weekend in the fourth
Chingford League cross-country meeting of this winter’s campaign, which was
held in Claybury, Woodford. Their strong contingent produced a number of
impressive displays as they improved their chances of winning the respective
leagues within each of the junior age-groups.
For the under 13 girls, rising star Madeline Carr stole the honours with
an impressive first place finish, followed home by team-mates Katie Inch in
third place, Serena Espeute in fifth, Sophie Grant in sixth, Joelle Ewen in
eighth, Amelia Hall in ninth and Katherine Myers in tenth.
In the under 13 boys’ race, Daniel Richards finished in third place for
Orion closely followed by Ben Pattison in fourth position. George Day ran
solidly to achieve sixth place and Jake Callis came home in tenth.
Orion’s Essex under 15 girl runner Georgia Tuckfield
stormed to victory for the under 15 girls, with Sydney Taylor in pursuit, to
continue with their good form this season.
In the under 15 boys’ run, George Hoy kept up his winning streak with a
comprehensive victory and there was an excellent effort from Cheyenne
Antoine-Chagar who finished in second place. Matthew Boyce in fourth and Jack Waller
in sixth helped Orion to dominate this particular age category.
For the under 17 girls’ race, Armanni Antoine-Chagar produced a spirited
performance to finish ahead of the field whilst Melissa Timpson also ran
strongly to achieve her third place finish.
In the under 17 boys’ event, Alex Gordon finished comfortably ahead of
his rivals to ease home in first position, ably supported by Orion colleagues
Alberic Hall in third, Buddy Green in seventh and Timothy Carter in eighth.
Orion’s youngsters were well pleased with their displays as they won the
team event in all age-groups in what was an excellent afternoon of
cross-country running.
Orion Juniors hosted the first Young
Athletes League Match at Walthamstow Pool & Track on Sunday 3rd of May 2010.
Orion were up
against St Albans and Southend whilst Newham took on Medway in a separate match
in this double header.
Despite the appalling conditions Orion had
57 young athletes turn up to compete for their club on the day. The athletes in
the under 13 age group were representing the club for the first time and some
excellent performances were achieved. Jordan Bailey was 1st in the
100m, 200m and the long jump whilst his training partner Morgan Letchford
managed 1st in the 75m hurdles and 2nd in the 100 and
200m sprints. In the 800m Ben Pattison was 1st in a new PB of 2
minutes 36 seconds.
On the field Charlie Weston came 1st
in the high jump with a PB of 1.2m. In the shot Ethan Bickmore-Vaughan was 2nd.
The girl’s event was equally competitive
with standout performances coming from Joelle Ewen, 2nd in the 1200m
in front of her training partner Amelia Hall.
The girl’s field events saw Melissa Cleary
come 3rd in the high jump with a PB 1.14m and Rebecca Wiggins come 2nd
in the shot put again with a PB 6.42m.
In the boys under 15 event, County and
South of England champion Jermaine Hamilton was 1st in the 100m,
200m and discus with his team mate Faiz Bapikee also winning the 400m and the
long jump. Paul Inkpen was 2nd in the 80m hurdles, 200m and the shot
put.
Zachariah Hall was 3rd in the 80m
hurdles and the discus.
Amy Richards and Channon Bramwell raced to
a 1-2 in the under 15 girls 200m with Channon also finishing 2nd in
the 100m. New member Jessica Edwards was 3rd in the 1500m.
Chioma Onyeche had a good day in the throws
coming 1st in the discus, 2nd in the shot and 4th
in the javelin. Lizzie Peatee was 1st in the high jump with a 1.4m
clearance.
Orion’s strong sprint performances
continued in the under 17 age group with Rohan Dolphy finishing 1st
in the 100m and 2nd in the 200m. Rohan also won the shot put.
Brothers Nathaniel and Joseph Glynn were the first two home in the steeplechase
with Joseph also coming 2nd in the discus and javelin.
In the woman’s under 17 team, Nikkita
Sartori-Sigrist was 1st in the 80m and 300m hurdles as well as 2nd
in the high jump whilst team-mate Roseanne Ampofo had a great day winning the
100m, 200m and long jump events.
With her main event, pole vault, being
cancelled due to the adverse conditions, India Wellings went on to come 2nd
in the discus and javelin. Melissa Timpson came 2nd in the hammer.
The day ended with the Orion boys under 13
relay team of; Jordan Bailey, Daniel Richards, Callum McLarty and Morgan Letchford
winning the 4 x 100m. The under 15 team of Hanif Henry, Faiz Bapikee, Paul
Inkpen and Jermaine Hamilton followed suit to win their race.
The final result was: 1st St
Albans 538 pts, 2nd Orion 518 pts, 3rd Southend 372 pts.
In the other event Medway (545 pts) beat
Newham (380 pts).

CHAMPIONSHIP
Thirty Seven Orion Juniors represented their Boroughs in the first London Youth Games Cross Country Championship for a number of years which took place on Hampstead Heath. Over 700 competitors from 29 London Boroughs braved the cold and muddy course at the notorious Parliament Fields.
In the year 9 & 10 age category Georgia Tuckfield took on the race from the very start. She stormed up the hill in the lead and maintained her strong form right to the finishing line to win by 12 seconds. Georgia was delighted to be supported by her team members, Sydney Taylor who ran a superb race and secured 5th position and Georgia Maltese who was happy to be the 3rd scorer for Waltham Forest in 17th place. The girl’s performance secured them 2nd place overall in the team results.
There was also praise for Orion’s high jumper Lizzie Peattie who completed the 2k course in a respectable 8.30 minutes.
The first race of the day was in the under 13 girl’s, where Evangeline Foster achieved 8th position, Madeline Carr 13th , Katie Inch 14th ,Sophie Grant 28th , Serena Espeute 38th, Joelle Ewen 42nd, Bethany Frost 90th, Courtney Reid 91st. Charlotte Gordon , Amelia Hall, Bethany Deering and Iris Maxfield also competed in this event. The girls outstanding performance achieved 4th place overall.
Armanni Antoine-Chager was one of three girls representing Orion in the u17 Women’s race. She ran a great race to come 5th and was the 2nd scorer in the gold winning Waltham Forest team. Her performance was all the more remarkable because she had competed in a Mid- Essex schools event the day before. She was also well supported by her team mates Claire Huggins (15th) and Lauren Pereira (60th)
Orion were also well represented in the boys events with Daniel Richards 9th, Jake Callis 20th, Morgan Letchford, George Day, George Hart, Andrew Davies, Ben Goodyear, Patrick Love and Teddy Johnson all competing in the under 13’s. Charlie Weston returned from illness and did well to finish the course.
In the under 15’s George Hoy was the first Orion athlete home followed by Cheyenne Antoine-Chager and Jack Waller whilst the under 17’s were represented by Alex Gordon, Ben Silverstone, Alberic Hall and Buddy Green.
Orion’s athletes helped Waltham Forest achieve 4th place overall and Ralph Robinson from Sports Development complimented Orion for its contribution.
