National Junior Athletics League Southern Thames Division Match 2 - Stockwood Park Luton, Sun 24 May 2009

Men
Orion took part in their second NJAL fixture at Luton, again with a small team of just 7 Men and 2 Women, covering 9 Mens and 2 Womens events which was slightly down on the number covered in the first fixture but this was understandable on what turned out to be the hottest of the year so far! However, some notable performances were recorded by the Otion team. Ben Studham recorded faster times than in the first fixture when he ducked under the 12 second barrier with 11.8 in the 100 metres and followed that with a time of 24 seconds dead in the 200m.  Huy Vu was also quicker over the 110m hurdles where a welcomed victory was recorded in 16.0 seconds dead. Huy was again our busiest athlete with a 40.12 metres Javelin throw for 3rd place and a 14.54m Shot Put for 2nd place, rounding off a successful day for Huy. In the 1500m Frankie Conway ran his first race in the League scoring a good 3rd place in 4:09.3.
Women
Lauren MacGregor and Jay Andrews scored an impressive double with A and B string victories in the 3000 metres with Lauren 1st in 10:49.1 and Jay 1st in 10.55.0. The girls were a minute ahead of the rest of the field. Despite that gruelling 7.5 lap race with the sun beatingh down on them, the both lined up for the 1500 metres after jusy a short break and in the A String race Lauren was 3rd in 5:00.8 and in the B String Jay was 2nd in 5.07.0.

  NEWS AND MESSAGES

Orion duo smash 3000 Metres pbs
and move into UK Top 10 Rankings
at Woodford Open Graded Track Meeting 18.04.09
  report by Dave Joyce
Seven Orion Harriers juniors warmed up for the imminent Track season by running in various events at the meeting at Ashton Fields
in one of the last pre-season meetings .

Orion Under 17 duo Lauren MacGregor and Jay Andrews smashed their personal best times over 3000 metres with Lauren clocking 10:41.67 and Jay 10:49.83.
Lauren shaved 10 seconds from her previous best and Jay reduced her pb by 8 seconds. These times move them into 5th and 7th in the UK Athletics national rankings for 2009.
Their Coach Maxine Joyce said "The girls ran extremely well. I was expecting pbs from them and they'll both improve these times further as the season progresses and they participate in some good standard competition races later this year".
John Stowe, the Essex AAA's Women's team Manager, is also delighted with the girls progress and has named them both to represent Essex as part of the Under 17's Women's team to contest the Southern Inter-Counties Track and Field Championships in August.
John has indicated that he will also select them for the Essex Senior Women's team as a result of how well the pair are running.

Hu Vu Orion's Sprint Hurdles Specialist showed some quality hurdling by finishing 1st Under 20 in the Men's U20 110m Hurdles event, clocking 18:20.

Ben Silverstone was second Under 15 in the 800 metres race clocking 2:18.75 and Ellis Ball in the same mixed age race was first Under 17 across the line, just behind Ben with a time of 2:23.98.

In the 800 metres Girls race, Orion top Under 15 middle distance athlete Armanni Antoine-Chager took on and beat 5 Woodford Green & Essex Ladies runners, winning in a time of 2:30.2.

Orion's Under 13 star Georgia Tuckfield was first in her age group over 1500 metres, clocking 5:24.6 to complete a good pre-season build up consisting of a string of victories over 800 metres and 1500 metres.
